It should be easier for you to find a job in Canada as we are short of drivers right now and have many programs to help people here. I know a company that has a few drivers from Denmark here on a work VISA and it was no problem for them to find work here.
It is rarely that cold (-15C to -20C) in British Columbia unless you are up in the mountains. Anywhere else out west, though, it is often that cold and even colder, often in the -30 range.
Most trucks these days will start without a problem in the cold weather provided you take care of them, plug them in at night or run an Auxilliary Power Unit to keep the engine oil warm, etc.
If you were to get a job out in BC, I'm sure there will be many truckers out there who can help you ensure your truck will start each morning.
You should look for a job driving for a company at first, a company driver, NOT an owner operator. Therefore, you don't have to worry about your truck - you won't own it. This is also where RIGHT NOW you will earn the most money. After you have driven truck for a couple of years and know what's what and how the industry works over here, etc., THEN is the time to consider being an Owner/Operator (O/O).
Flatbed is a type of truck that hauls heavy equipment and other such things. It is a more specialized area of trucking and not one you usually do right from the get go. -

Make good money + live like you are rich = broke, living payday to payday.
or
Make good money + live like you don't = money to invest in a business.
Most don't want to hear the truth because the truth hurts.
Car payments, upscale housing, cell phones for mom and the kids, cable t.v., big screen tv, playstation, eating out, movies, the mall (everything), and credit cards are all things of luxury.
Being able to make the payments and being able to afford something have become synonimous, when in actuality they are two very different things.
America, is the America as it has always been. Work your butt off to get ahead and you usually will. Sqaunder your wages on frivilous consumerism and you'll do well, right up until a glitch comes and you have nothing to fall back on.
90% of marketing is parting you from your money for something you don't need. If you give it up, you've given up and will reap the rewards.
rant off... -
