Ummmm air brakes is one of the endorsements and is a written test. You will get checked out on your PTI (walk arond) when you go to get your license. Might be a question or two on it on the written under general knowlege. I really do hope you are learning all you can and not the bare necessities.
botoler Thanks this. -
yes I am learning all I can, just wanted to know what to focus on... I don't take any shortcuts sir. Thanks for the input.

i did mine in wisconsin and all was written test on computer. did general knowledge, air brakes and combination. that is the minimum for your permit there.

To get your permit you have to take three test (General knowledge, Air Brakes, Combo) If you complete all three and pass you will get your permit. Once your ready to go for the actual CDL portion you will have to do a Pre-trip inspection with the office/instructor to pass the actual driving part. Good luck

If your taking your CDL permit tests in Illinois, your best bet is contact your local DMV and ask them. Each state has different ways of doing things. Here in Pennsylvania, the combination vehicle portion of the test is lumped in with the general knowledge test. The only other written tests are air brake, doubles/triples, and hazmat. Your actual driving test is broken down into segments here. You have a pre-trip exam which includes your air brake check, your skills test, and your road test. I think most states are similar in how they do things, but like I said I would contact your local DMV with any questions about specific things.

I would double check with the state your going to take your test in but from what I know have heard and who i know its pretty much across the board you have to take your written test that cover the class of truck which in this case would be class A combination, air brake and what ever other endorsements you want to get. than when you take your skills test and driving test you while be tested on your pretrip which INCLUDES air brakes knowledge. Now depending on the guy you get, mine asked me a few simple questions on the pre trip and about the air brakes things like how would you this or what would you look for. i nailed the on the head and he said pretrip done lets go for a ride. thats when it got fun since the first round i tested the clutch went out( clutch arm snapped) so i went down the next day with my personal truck big old classic all polished up and decked out. now i payed a school to test out at since i didnt have the trailer required. so when i pulled in with my truck all the students and the testers chins hit the ground...tested and past np.....quick note I had to get their busted truck back since the instructor did not know how to drive with no pedal....lol but under pa rules since i was not able to meet the require distances for the road test do to break down i had to retest yet they recorded it as a first round pass....was worth the look on their faces when that saw the big purple beast.....good luck

I drive for Prime, i am an instructor as well, what you need is combinations, air brakes and general knowledge, i suggest you to get this 3 in your home state and then head to Springfield, MO with your permit in hand, it would be a lot easier just to go to Prime for an orientation and to get your CDL instructor. Good luck!
