I just paid off my truck and quit the last company I was leased to, and now I'm in the process of getting my own authority. Will I have to pay the $550 for IFTA or should their be proof that the company I was leased on with was paying it?

You can request a copy of it from the company. They may not give it to you, though, if they are the ones that paid it. If you have to pay, it is prorated from the month you place the vehicle in service, not the full $550. It will be due again, for the full year, in July, payable by the end of August.

Make sure you keep track of the receipt form. It comes back in September or so and we don't license our trucks till end of March. Every #### year I spend at least 3 hours looking for that stupid little piece of paper.

Why do you have to pay $550 for IFTA? Are you confusing IRS Form 2290 (heavy use) with fuel tax? IFTA doesnt charge you anything except $10 for the sticker.

Yes you're correct I am asking about the 2290. I've only been driving as an o/o for 6 months. I'm finding it's a whole different world when you find out what all you suppose to have. But I still believe I'll be better off with my own plates and authority. Thanx guys.

    It's not for IFTA.

In July (By end of Aug) you have to pay your 2290 tax. That proof of payment is needed again in Dec (jan) when you reapply for your IRP base plate. If you haven't paid your 2290, you don't get your IRP plates.

Ya 2290 is for my county's treasurer when I license it. (I'm not apportioned like most of you guys are I run county plates for WY and bingo cards for ID sometimes MT). IFTA's a whole other pain in the ### alltogether. But I can agree with you owning your owns the way to go IF you can make it work and work well.

You might be confusing him by saying he needs proof of payment in dec or jan (im confused). You need to prove you have paid 2290 when your apportioned plate is due (whatever month that is). My apportioned plates are due in September so i just pay my 2290 in july so i will have my receipt by the time i get my apportioned plates in sept. Dont worry too much about being a few months late paying 2290, there is no penalty and they wont shut you down, you just wont be able to pay your apportioned reg if you cant prove you have paid 2290.
