Thank you so much Tractor Trailer, and everyone. What would be great is for somebody to step forward, and be able to prove that they were "discriminated" for being Canadian.
For instance, recently - we were looking for a new company to pull for. This company was advertising on kijiji for new o/o's. We jumped through hoops for them. Provided clean abstracts, years of dangerous goods - tanker Super B with no accidents experience. All the oilfield related tickets - yadda yadda.
They kept telling us. Then, when we had done everything they needed/wanted - they stated to us that we lived in the wrong area - suddenly.
A short time after - I heard from a good source they applied to the Federal Govt for Temp workers. I have to admit. I was stunned.
They had no reason to not take us on as we've been working outside of our residential area for eons! (Hence the nice comfy Petey bunks) LOL!
But seriously, I have no proof that this is whats going on. I can only guess that my source wouldn't lie to me. What is there to gain?
But if there is an individual out there - who can empathize - who maybe works for a large trucking company - and has a conscience... who might have proof.........

True enough and something you see in a lot of places. It's hard to say if it's the company or the workers to blame though.
I know a lot of people would avoid working for a company where most of the drivers are of a nationality that stands out due to skin colour and dress. On the flip side I'm sure many, especially recent immigrants, are much more comfortable working in a place with people they have those things in common with. -
As someone trying to break into the industry as a driver I'm beginning to think this is what's going on. There have been multiple job postings here in BC for 10, 20 even 40 drivers that specifically state no experience required. Yet they do not respond when contacted.
It's happening in the trades as well, job postings for 20-40 workers on Kijijiji and Craigslist that don't respond when contacted. -
That's a great way of thinking. They haven't invaded MY job so it is not my problem. The day will come when you are forced to compete with others from a far away land, and yes they are trying to have a better life, and they will be happy to do your job at half of what you are paid and they'll be early every day to work too. Maybe your sector of the industry will be the last to be targeted, and maybe you will think to yourself, gee, why wasn't anything done to prevent this?Down the road Thanks this.

is it fair to blame it to the people with the TWF ???
they just look for a way to get a better life. -
I am in the trucking industry, my customers can pick up the phone any day and call any one of these outfits that employ TFW should they choose instead of me.
The companies that employ these workers were crap companies well before they decided they needed to look outside Canada to find drivers.
What is plan b a wall? -
Plan B is to ensure that once someone is here that they are treated equally and paid 100% of what a Canadian is paid. Tough to compete with someone making 85% of your wage. Never mind that's it's unfair to the TFW. Are they only paying 85% income tax?GST?Payroll taxes for benefits they'll never collect?Do they get a 15% discount at the grocery store? The drycleaners?Cellphone plan?
Ever hear of the Chinese Head Tax? At least back then they didn't try to hide their racism. Charge upfront to get in to the country, so the racism is at least upfront. Or charge the TFW on the backend so Canada can pretend to be an equal and non-discriminatory country and then go recruit from "brown" countries, pay them less and keep them at an economic disadvantage for as long as they remain. F'n despicable. -
They are hiring TFW as O/O's?
-
If you are contacting these companies with a resume, you may not hear back as I think many of these companies are not looking for drivers TODAY but rather, looking to fill a file with potential drivers. Then, should the need arise, they just go through their file contacting people until they get what they need.
