I just spent 2 or 3 days reading this entire thread. Thanks for all of the entertainment guys! I'm not a trucker, but am interested in becoming one. I'm 40, been working in IT for almost 20 years and i'm ready for a career change. Completely and totally burned out in this career. Sick of a cubicle, sick of IT and sick of corporate America. Trucking has always been an idea floating in my head, but i've never had the balls to make the leap. A buddy of mine just gave up a 20+ year career about 6 months ago. Went to trucking school (Roadmaster in Dunn, NC) and is now working for KLLM. Needless to say, I'm envious that he made the jump and I haven't! I've been doing tons of research over the last month or so. Reading all through these forums, looking at videos on YouTube, etc. I'm seriously contemplating finally doing this! And, from what I've read here, EPES sounds exactly like the place I would want to drive for! I live in Sanford, NC so I'm not far at all from Greensboro. I have a wife and a 13 year old son at home, so the weekend (or weekly) time home is important because of that. Nobody else seems to offer everything that EPES does. My background is clean, no tickets or accidents and never been arrested in my life. Have a solid work history, minus about 6-7 months of unemployment when I was layed off about 2 years ago. So I don't think anything in my background should exclude me from being hired on at EPES, unless there's something else they check that I don't know about?
I'm researching some training options currently, using the approved schools on the EPES website. I'm hoping to decide for sure where to go for training and hopefully start the training before the end of this year. Not in a rush at all, I'm definitely going to let everything sink in and not jump into things too quickly.
I'll be on here with you guys with lots of questions I'm sure! -
yeah...I'm "racist"....I'm only in an INTERRACIAL MARRIAGE! lol
-
3 words..I....HATE...YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol Les did say you'll go out that way......NOT OFTEN...but it DOES happen! Was pickin' with the "wife, away from the wife" this morning about the stops with HV loads....I pointed out....LOOK THERE'S AR! SEND ME THERE! Been there plenty of times at USA, they said NO! I said, you wanna divorce? lol
-
I gotta buddy of mine, that is a computer programmer...he likes it, but knows how you can get burned on the career! If you get on, PM on how to hack the qualcomm! lol PLEASE?! lmao
-
well we'll see.....was talking to another guy on the way out today and he said last time he got sent out there got a reset waiting for the backhaul. all those miles won't do any good if i'm sitting there waiting for something to get back across the river. made it down to Birmingham and run it on out tomorrow and relax and then drop Wednesday morning then we'll see. time worked out exactly right but i'm not going to drop at midnight i'll wait till around 8 and then see if I can get turned back this way quick. hey you been getting some sweet long ones lately lol you gotta share hehehehe

Haha, if it has an operating system...it can be hacked! BTW, dinkytruckerdoo...I'm a fellow metalhead! If I do this and get on at EPES, you won't be the only driver wearing the metal shirts and blasting some tunes!
How are the stereo systems in those tractors anyway? \m/ -
having a solid work history will help. I hope your buddy is doing okay at KLLM. I looked at them hard one of the drivers I used to manage in a previous life worked for them and highly recommended them, but from what I've been reading on their posts, right about the time I got in they went to hell as a company and nobody there really is happy right now. so glad I didn't go that route. if you can, do the community college training if there's one close to you. you'll be glad you did and the extra time in the seat will really show and pay off on your road test. the lack of it at the other schools sure showed in the group I went to orientation with. I was the only student to make it past the first day. I had the 380hr cc course and was well prepped for the road test. the others were 3 week cdl mill wonders and sure weren't. 20 years in management and I got tired of it all too. I've been much happier only dealing with one ####### (me lol) than 200 of them every day. good luck to you wherever you go, but if you can get in here, it's worth it.

Pretty sure I'd be going with one of the community colleges. Either Johnson County or Sampson County. Seems like better instruction and cheaper than a lot of the private schools.

Also, my buddy with KLLM seems to like it so far. Granted, it's only been a few months. He's doing a team right now with a guy he went to truck school with. Like you, I did read a lot of not-so-good things about them recently. I guess time will tell. He's a smart guy and won't stick around if it's a bunch of BS.
