Proper specking can get those numbers. But those specks will not work in every job. Our 86 models the fleet avg was above 10 mpg. They were made for the job at hand for that contract. 56 k gross max, all interstate, in southeast. Those trucks in OTR would stink! But was perfect for what they were made for. But there is always room for improvement , any savings goes into profits ! The OP's load was mean. Lots going against it( and him) . But any improvement is more cash! Best of luck guys ! Over size will never see numbers other segments can . Nature of the beast! But if can get that 5.2 up to 6 mpg , that's huge savings. May or may not be doable ! But be close to 10,000 in fuel savings at years end.

I wouldn't if you really knew Dice. He is pretty anal about tweaking out mpg on a truck and his 8.99 mpg is realistic. I have followed the stuff he has done over the years and he will find a way to tweak out another tenth per mile.

And another who is hitting those kind of mpg numbers is Henry Albert. He is one of the guys in the Freightliner Slice of Life program and FL uses him for PR stuff. He is an independent O/O and is pulling down serious high 8 mpg numbers like Dice. I think Dice has him beat though.

I am not quite as good at it as those guys and I am in the high 7 average camp.

Too many threads posted on this website with proof to start it over again here.

For the EcoTaz test, I posted every fill up at the pump along with my 2012 1st quarter IFTA.....

Plus my truck is on mygauges.com with over 2 years worth of fill ups under "Dice.s Truck2012"

You are right and have been using the infrared temp gun more and more on the brakes of the trailers I pull (all I do is Power Only) and finding more and more of them dragging that robs alot of fuel. Even slightly can make a difference.

OK Dice. I never heard of you or your numbers. So if its not BS, please accept my apology.

    However.....

I just looked up Henry Albert's blog. His worst was 7.763 because of "snow, wind and heavy rain."
For a mpg reduction of 25% in those conditions with his set up, the 5.2 with the load in my original post isn't too bad.
