Some of the better paying ads Ive seen in the area are tankers/hazmat. I have all my endorsements, I had to pass em to graduate the school I went through. Dont see much for fb companies around here. Im gonna make a couple phone calls monday, dont see any harm in asking. And tuesday I can go back out on the road. Its nice to be able to look around while im still workin. And not have to do the panic unemployed job search.

The better the company or pay, the more experience you need. As many others have said, at least a year, some places want at least two years, and others even more.

you had to take a hazmat and tankers test to pass? That's odd, most companies don't require either endorsement.

It was at a private school here in Omaha. Had to pass all the tests at the dmv as part of it. Only extra thing I did was pay for my background check to get the hazmat on my liscense.

And I guess I wont get my hopes up to high for another 6 months. Will give me time to figure out the best fit for me.

OP I'm happy with Con-Way truckload and they'll take applicants at 6 months experience provided they have a clean record & hazmat (especially with tanker so they can continue to haul bulk totes). I know they have regional stuff out of Omaha, but I don't know if you'll have to put in some time OTR before qualifying. It is all dry van though.

Of course there is con-way freight if you want to do ltl -- their experience requirements vary by terminal though...

your right next to crete carrier corp they would start someone like you with your experience out at .40 a mile if your a national account meaning all 48. its a place to stay at while you build your resume then you can always find something that works for you if you dont like em. I started at stevens transport outta dallas where the starting pay was .26 but i didnt know any better at the time now ive got a few years under my belt and make very decent living for me and my family.

At 8 months experience with Stevens, I applied at a handful of places.

I was offered a position at Averrit but turned it down when the recruiter told me this was for a different position than what I had applied for. I applied for West, SW and midwest regional and the position was midwest, SE and NE. I refuse to go back to the NE so I turned them down.

I was offered a position and was set up to fly to Chicago for orientation/training with Schnieder pulling rail containers locally. I was walking out the door for my DOT physical when my current employer called and offered me a job which I have been at going on a year and a half now.

I love my current employer as they treat us like family, good pay (with the opportunity to double my income by getting into a 9/10 car truck), good benefits, home most every night, etc. I even got a brand new 2013 Pete 587 in January.

There are good jobs out there that will take on a driver with little experience. You just have to find them. I was very fortunate.

One other thing, when looking for a new job, ignore the "experience required" and apply anyway. You have the proper endorsements, so if a good company needs a driver, they may hire you and bend their own hiring rule. I worked for a tanker/hazmat company that advertised 3 yrs. tanker experience required, but they still hired 2 drivers right out of CDL school. A few drivers posted on here they were hired right out of CDL school with fuel haulers and hazmat chemical haulers. One of them hauls sulfuric acid for CTL and one hauls diesel for Loves Truck Stops. That's just 2 of many who have posted on here.
