OKso here goes I'm 36 married we have a 5 year son. my wife is a stayat home mom. I've been driving tow truck from 19-23. Then at 23 gotmy cdl B
startingdriving 4 car hauler for the same company local weekly then weekendsto new york city with 4 cars then to long island came home with 2boats for 2 years. I started driving for the city I live in plowingthe streets and driving garbage truck which I currently still do. I'min the process of upgrading my license to an cdl A in 3-4 months Ihave it .The city has a training officer and tractor with opentrailers. I've been there 12 years I make $40,000 with full benefits.Union. I work 5 days a week 40 hrs. $18hr presently. I also amself employed Landscape /snowplow business I gross about the sameamount in 6months I work 7 days a week doing that. I have aclean license take random breathalyzers and random urine tests for 12years now. I don't smoke anything and only have a few drinks once ortwice a month.
Thisis my plan/goal I've found a 3 car hauler with a 2 car trailer so 4cars from a local car hauler company that has 20 tractorcottrell setups, They want $60,000. They have financing thru them, and either under my own authority or theirs, run loads for themexclusively or join load-boards. I've got insurance quotes for thevehicle and for new business start-up, I will keep the lawn/snowbusiness my wife will run that. Within 3 years add a tractor and 9 or10 car and 1 employee.
Thecity job has the security and benefits but after starting thesnow/lawn business 4 years ago I've came to the conclusion that thecity is just a stepping stone to my next and final adventure. I likedtowing , I like snowplowing and driving the garbage truck but I lovehauling cars. I can take a leave of absence from the city.. Worsecase I can concentrate solely on snow/lawn business.
Somy thing is I love being my own boss. I'm familiar with consand pros of car hauling.I love driving but I want to be home mostevenings during the week and close enough to home for another10-12 yrs. My son has a condition, he hasn't had any issues but Idon't want to be to far away. He has medicaid for backup insurance. So thats my part of my dilemma, insurance for me and mywife.
The company that has the truck is hiring but forsomeone with 3 years experience and cdl A but with all the benefits Ihave now but a lot more money.
Anotherreason I want to go with the setup for $60,000 is to run for themexclusively the place is 8 miles from my house. If the option to runfor them is not available
I think a tractor and trailerwould be my best option and run load boards.
I've learned a lot since I joined this site.
So what'syour opinion

Thanks
Help me make my decision My life story next 20 years (on the long side)

You like driveing NOW , but will you still like it 2 or 3 years from now? I'd hate to see ya throw a good gig like that city job away! There's lots of guys on here that would kill for that job.
As far as being your own boss thats great when things are good BUT things have a way og going bad in a hurry. What are you going to do with that truck when all of a sudden it needs $5000 in repairs just after you spent the available cash on tires? The list goes on and on, only you can really decide -
I had a city job , union benefits, etc. when I was in my mid 20's. Had I stayed I could have retired @ 6 years ago. You seem to be convinced to leave that for sure thing. Good Luck.

i say go for it. People say they would kill for your government job? Thats the problem - too meany people waiting for government help and afraid to take matters into their own hands. You young guy - what do you have to loose, you will always find cdl job in new york. Im 37 with young daughter like you - i do good in trucking business and i know many many people who does even better. I would actually kill myself if i would have to do your government job for the rest of my life... I have owned trucks for the last 11 years and for the life of me i dont understand why people choose to work as a company otr drivers for 40- 50k a year
Tomczak716 Thanks this. -
I think you've actually answered all your own questions ...... but if you want MY opinion, I'd stick with the City job because of ALL the right reasons mentioned above. You obviously have time and $$ built in for 'paying hobbies' ..... so stick with THAT plan and just change around the hobbies from time to time to stay interested ...... I wouldn't go gettin in over yer head ..... the key word in 'broker' is BROKE ..... don't go there unless you have A LOT OF GOLDEN NEST EGGS HIDDEN FOR THE MISSUS AND Jr. ....... curse that caps lock button again.
Tomczak716 Thanks this. -
Ive owned my own trucks and its not great all the time you think well i made 20k this month then next month the motors shot and that cost you
27k
Not to mention the dot and states in general are getting worse and worse.
Then the final nail is fuel one day is 3 bucks then 5 bucks they like to make you think you have some change then slap it to you again.
But if you dont mind that yea go for it lol
Personal ill stick with a company gig where I am home 90% of the time before dark and have benefits along with making a good living that i dont have to sweat if i blow a tireTomczak716 Thanks this. -
I don't know how well this relates to what your plans are, but this year I retire from the Marine Corps and can't wait to get out. I started my own company while in to test the waters, and now that I have a half way decent idea of what I'm doing I'm looking forward to running local. Of course anything new will be a bit scary but what the hell, just go for it! Best of luck.

Those kids need Dad more than money.
Money, you can make do. Driving is gonna take you away for far too much, and they'll grow up without you... and they'll be far worse for it.
