I have been looking into a lot of companies and have found some good ones to start with but let me ask are there any flatbed drivers out there that can give me a heads up if I choose to go that road? I want to know is tarping as sucky as everyone says it is or not that bad and are there any otr flatbed companies that hire recent cdl grad students who don't tarp that much?

Melton just started hiring students. Great company. Tarping isn't so bad once you get the hang of it.

Thanks yeah I was looking at Melton and I think they have dry van also or maybe its reefers but yeah I'm looking at a few not sure if I want flatbed or not just keeping my options open for now

Nope just flatbed at melton.

You are pronably thinking Maverick. Hate to say is but tarping is the nature of the beast with flatbeds. Like ghost said once you get used to it its not to bad. I had to tarp a load of fence post once, and for all things to protect it from the weather.

Maybe it was maverick I was thinking of I'm not sure I want to do the tarp thing but who knows maybe one day for now I just need to get through school
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Yeah as a company driver you'll tarp cause all the O/O take the easiest loads, lightest loads cause of fuel, and ones that don't require tarping. Leaves the companies with the big, heavy, tarp loads. Gotta love them 8ft drop tarps. It seemed like every load I tarped.

Tarping is only hard to those who have never been a flatbedder & don't know what they're talking about. Most companies like Melton Truck Lines pay about $40.00 to tarp a load, which is about as hard as putting up a beach umbrella unless you're mentally challenged, then you probably couldn't get a CDL anyway.
Trust me, if you go with a reefer or dry van company, the first time you deliver to a grocery warehouse, you'll be kicking yourself for not going flatbed or tanker. Imagine walking into an insane asylum where everyone is babbling and drooling & that's a grocery warehouse.jxu417 Thanks this. -
Maverick has flatbed & reefer.

If you don't tarp that much then why do you want flatbed? Tarping is hard work.I personally think those hard working flatbedders don't get nearly as much for tarping. They only receive like $25.00 to $50.00 to tarp,no money to untarp and the company keeps the rest which is like $100.00..But with exp I imagine these flatbedders can tarp a load in less then an hr.
jxu417 Thanks this.
