Keep in mind with google that it's not updated regularly, if at all. There will be times that what you saw on google satellite/earth won't be there when you get to the location. And most of what I've seen are summer shots. Things tend to look different with 3ft of snow on the ground and trees with no leaves.

    Don't rely 100% on technology.

If the person giving you directions is using references related to food or shopping malls, it should be a red flag too! As one person suggested also, get to the shipping/receiving people. They USUALLY understand the proper directions a trucker needs, unlike most receptionists.

That only works if the secretary puts a man on the line to give directions.

Secretary directions always send me the opposite way! Happened just last week. "Veer right off the ramp" but I double checked on Google maps and my destination was left off the ramp. Called again and wasted a few more confusing minutes with her then she put a man on and he confirmed what Google maps showed. I withheld my bad words for her!

I have done that also. I was delievering parts to make Forklifts and no phone number for the receiver, and address did not come up on my mapping program that I had. (Been a while do not remember the program) And I did stop and asked a local person and was following their directions. Ooops ended up in an area I did not want to be. 9-1-1 "THis is not an emergency but do not have local number and need assistance to back out of the street I am on and some directions if you can please send a Police Officer out to this location please" Cop asked if I could make a turn which I could not with out taking out Stop Sign but that is why I called so he stopped Traffic and for me to back out. and told me how to get to my customer. He was very helpful and said thanks for calling better this way than he having to give a ticket for being unsafe or running down the stop sign.

    Best be safe than sorry...

Calling the police to get help out of a bad situation is an option I hadn't considered before. Makes sense (as long as JP Cop doesn't write me a ticket). I think handling the situation with courtesy really helped.
