Thanks once again. I will look into this and mention it to the job counselor here as well. She gave me a card yesterday for an rep with National Training, they coast around 4K for everything, part of the course you can do at home and then 3 weeks at their facility in Jacksonville.

Yes, there's one about ten miles away on I-95, and I wondered if it would be advisable to pay the place a visit and chat folks up, this just gave me some encouragement!

I am not squeaky clean but I am not an axe murderer or anything, I know if I am persistant and work hard (which I am and I do), something will work out for me.

The one recruiter I've spoken with so far, from National Training, told me that after you pass their written portion (33 lessons), you then go to the 3 week training at their facility. During that time they help to place you in a truck with a trainer from a company for one on one learning. It sounds pretty good to me, and the career center counselor told me they have funding to help me pay for this school.

I've been curious about the "Flying J" just to go and see what the truck wash looks like LOL!

Sounds like a good place to go. Truckers are generally very friendly people. Sit at the counter with a coffee and I'm sure you'll find someone to chat with and pick their brains throughout the day!! LOL

I'll talk to anyone and I've spent hours talking to various truckers, police officers, waitresses, etc., at the various truck stops we've been to.

My wife and I went let the company pay for the school which we pay back at the rate of $75.00 a week until its paid off. If we stay for 12 months we get 1/2 the tuition back and after 18 months the other 1/2... If we leave before its paid off, we are required to pay off the balance. Many of the other companies require you to sign a length of service contract which they can use against you on your DAC if you leave early. Be careful of this. We didn't want to let the company pay for the school after reading everything we did on the board here.. it was just an economic necessity. A classmate however got a Pell Grant and owed less than $300.00 for the entire school including the hotel..

Go for the Community College program if at all possible and make sure its a PTDI certified school.

Well I found out I do not qualify for the Workforce Act money because I have professional credentials in a different field. So, I either can try for the Pell money or the training school suggested I get a SallieMae loan, which of course he had a form for. I don't know about that. The career center is pushing me back in the direction of my former job, which pays squat, because they get paid to get people off public assistance and back into the work force again.

I need to get funded for a school before my benefits run out. National Training helps with job placement (no guarantees, of course) and you do walk out of their program with your CDL in hand, so that's a help. The entire school costs around 5 grand, with the DOT physical and drug screen out of pocket.

However, I am going to follow up with the community college and see where that goes. You do not get a CDL with that but you are prepared to take the test. I don't know howmuch that costs or if I will even qualify for the Pell.

I guess the last resort would be going to a company funded school like you all did. I know it's not recommended but it might have to happen that way. If I do this, however, I want to be fully trained but qualified instructors and it sounds as if National has that going for them.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

it all worked out in the end...

I went to Roehl training and paid cash. I received a loan from Sallie Mae for retraining in a career. I pay back $50.00 per month. I checked on line. They call them Career Training Loans.
