Chinatown is this; I retired at age 66, 3 years ago, and moved to the Orient. Live a great life here and cost of living is so cheap it's unbelievable. Bought a beautiful 4 bedroom, 2 bath condo with two live-in housekeepers that cost $150.00 each per month. The little wife, 30 years my junior, keeps the eagle eye on me for some reason! I hauled powder for Schwerman, but usually OTR liquid Hazmat. Some Hazmat powder product to chemical plants in Texas. Best wishes to you and your better half. Take her with you on the road. My wife went with me during my reefer pulling days & really enjoyed it. -

hey eli, i obtained my CDL A about a month ago. i live a few minutes north of chicago and am interested in driving a ready mix truck. since this is your are of expertise and you worked in chicago, i was wondering i you have any advice on who would hire a driver fresh out of school? i do have straight truck driving experience in the military. alot of companies i see are asking for 2yr+ experience (and same for well paying [local]tankers job). i understand that my pay isnt gona be all that upscale being also a newb but i wana start asap. if theres any advice you can give me, it will be much appreciated.
btw during cdl school a whole bunch of recruiters came in promising 32-37,500$$ range right out of school for otr positions. so im pretty sure you should be earning 40k+. two of the companies my instructor really liked was howe trucking and marvin keller, us express i hear (from an employee) is also a pretty good comapny to work for -
Your big dogs in Chicago area are prairie materials and ozinga. I worked mainly on the south side. There are a few others like k5 and welsh. Not real familiar with the north side. They may have a few others. I think I heard the big boys were slowly starting to hire again. They used to hire with no experience and would train. Just understand the construction market is still slow. If you get hired on you may work consistently for a couple months then when the weather turns your gonna sit. When it was good I would sit for 3-5 months in winter. Everything is union there witch is only good for the guys on top. Bottom guys constantly get bent over. Hope this helps.. Update for me I'm otr now for last couple months... Little different than bouncing around in concrete trucks...what a ride!

Hope the Otr deal is working out for you Eli. If you've ever considered driving in the oil field..that's where the big money is...and abt the concrete trucks, I can move down to the southern part of the city or jus drive out there for the job. And I don't mind being unemployed for the winter because right now I wana stay around Chicago for a lil while cuz I jus got back from a deployment not to long ago. I really would like to get in with a company to grt experience and not waste the summer away. u kno? And ya u r defintely right abt that union deal, it's all abt the seniority with them. I went to apply for an electrical union for a driver n guy tells me, there isn't much work alot of workers are laid off. I went in there the very nxt day with the required paper work and talked to an actual worker there to pay his dues and according to him they "swamped with the work load".

And I did come across ozinga and prairie while I was researching a d didn't really come across any positions that they wana train people for...should I jus give them a ring?
