After a lot of research I've decided to go with Roehl and their driver training school. I begin 20 May in Marshfield. Most of the comments I've seen have been positive and the few that aren't... well, there's always a few aren't there.
I like the emphasis on safety they appear to have and the fact that they stress time behind the wheel. It also helps that they have a yard relatively close to me here in NE OH. Another factor is that Roehl will reimburse me for tuition as long as I've driven at least 120,000 mi.
As I'm not a spring chicken I know that attitude and character are what will take you through the early phase of any new career. My goal is to work hard, not complain (but if I do, just the facts and keep personal feelings out of it). If I prove myself to be reliable, dependable, and safe I think what rewards there are will come.
Anyone else attending the 20 May class, please comment. I look forward to meeting you all.
btw, that logo for this website, the I-5 shield... man, I've driven that road so many times in a car it's soooo boring. Now when I have a chance to drive a car between SoCal and the NW I look for those little black lines on the map. There is some absolutely fantastic country out there! If anyone has an opportunity I recommend you get some water (just to be safe) and take that little road that goes from Hawthorne, NV west towards Lake Tahoe. Last time I took it there was a dirt road in good condition and beautiful country. I'll miss doing that kind of thing on the job.

good news golden earring, marshfield should be a lot nicer in May than it was for me in January. There is a lot of info on Roehl here and for the most part its quite accurate. I enjoyed RDTC and I'm now driving solo and still employed by Roehl so their system worked well for me. I still stay intouch with three of the five others in my class and all are doing well without any major compaints that I have heard. best of luck to you sir.

Thanks goblue. Yeah, May should be a lot nicer than Jan. Starting in May I'll also have time to handle a rig well before winter comes. Best of luck to you, hope things continue well.

Roehl is a great company. (At least, that's what my take on it is with all the prior research I did). Great pay and benefits, with lots of different regional opportunities... Thus giving you more of a chance to get home time. They are one of the few companies I look to drive for, once I've gained the experience necessary to make more money than what I make with my current employer. Stay SAFE out there driver!

Cool, I'm also set for RDTC on May 20, 2013. Ha, just received the call today acctually.
I'm nervous but excited. If it matters I chose National Refrigerated. -
Not sure when I'll be at RDTC, I have my DOT physical tomorrow and don't see any problems with that. I'm already conditionally hired for Roehl, once the results go to RDTC I should be scheduled for a class date. I'm looking forward to getting to Marshfield and get started with the school and get on the road. I drove in the past, about 10 years ago and still hold my CDL, I'm going to the school to get refreshed with the training and get caught up on the changes that have taken place. Plus, need to get my backing skills back up to speed. Once I have a class date, I'll do a post, would like to get to know and keep in touch with others going at the same time as I.

Breaker Breaker fellow future gearjammers for Roehl! Bygosh, I'm scheduled to start orientation for newly licenced drivers on 20 May as well. I hear nothing but great things about the company as well. At least from all but a few disgrunts. Ya, I was sorta wondering how arrangements for transportation, lodging, and food was going to work out, but my recruiter assures all those questions will be answered in a call from her about a week before class date. Yall don't be shy with chiming in on any other info yall may have on the subject.

I've been researching companies for over a month now and keep coming back to Roehl. I still have a lot of questions but I keep getting conflicting answers as I read the threads so I'm hoping that someone who has gone to RDTC or is going might be able to provide me with clear answers.
I have never had professional training in a big rig. I had friends in my younger days that drove OTR and one guy owned his own truck and let me drive it a couple of times. Will Roehl consider someone like me for their school?
I also keep reading post that say just because someone completes the RDTC, that doesn't mean you get a job offer. I find this confusing because if I am able to get in to RDTC, I plan on doing the loan which means I have to work for Roehl to pay them back. Can anyone clarify what they may be talking about by not getting a job offer.
Is this training paid training (need to plan ahead to make sure bills are covered)? I've seen people say that they pay $600 per week and I've seen people say that the pay is $60 per day the first week, $65 per day the second week, and .30cpm when you are with a trainer.
I guess I could call a recruiter and bug them with all these questions but I'd rather hear from someone who has or is going through what I hope to be going through later this year. My plan is to apply in mid July. My only fear is that Roehl seems to be getting so many people going to RDTC that by the time I'm able to apply....they may not need anymore drivers. lol -
I'll try and answer a few of those for you.
1. Yes they will consider you.
2. I am pretty sure (see: confident) if you pass RDTC you will be offered a job. I would imagine if you failed RDTC or some part of it that would exclude from moving forward.
3. The Loan you are talking about is for the 3-Week RDTC Program. As a newbie like me, Roehl pays for the RDTC Program. YOU have to pay $400.00 for the Hotel stay during RDTC. You also pay for transportation from the Hotel to Roehl and for your own food. Your also responsible for getting your CDL-A Driver's Permit, which is about $35.00 You also have to pay $185.00 prior to RDTC, for the Road Test(?) I don't have the pamphlet in front of me currently. On the 3rd Week of RDTC your responsible from some licensing fees also.
No-Pay for the 3-Week RDTC Program. I think you get paid $90.00 per 6-Hours of work while with a trainer. 8-14 days respectively. Then when your on your own you get mileage pay depending on what Fleet you chose.
I may be wrong with some things, but hope this helped you out.
As you stated, calling the Recruiter is your best bet. Mine is very informative and polite.
*Forgot to mention Roehl has classes every Monday. I could have started sooner but wanted to save some cash also.Last edited: Apr 23, 2013

If yur not gonna make it, or there are issues, i think rdtc takes care of it before you rack up a three week bill. If u do whats required they will offer a job, u can also go elsewhere if u want.
I dont think roehl makes their money at rdtc, they make more when u drive freight, makes sense for them to train u right and keep u.
