Heading into new york for the first time tomorrow. Going to 17th and surf avenue in brooklyn. I looked at the map on the ny dot page and it appears that i can take 86th street to 18th ave to cropsey. the question i have is how do you get onto 86th coming across that verrazano narrows bridge? would you take that first exit on dahlgren pl, make a right on 92nd st, a left on 7th, then a right onto 86th? I don't really see any other option to get on besides that dahlgren pl. on google images there doesn't appear to be any bridges of any sort there but not really sure if you're supposed to be on there. I'll be heading in about 4am

I took the Goethels with gave me a nice tour of the city. I'm thinking I should just take the Throngs-Neck just to avoid construction traffic from now on. Is there a toll on the way out if I use the Verrazano? I thought I saw toll booths.

Can a semi go through any of the tunnels?

Dahlgren exit is marked for 33' and shorter but I used to go that way with a day cab and 48'. Also that right turn from Dahlgren is a bear...more room to go left, then right on Ft. Hamilton Pkwy (yes it is a truck route), then right on 86th, right on 18th, left on Cropsey. No overhead obstacles on Cropsey either maybe except for wires.

It is very tight quarters down in there, I would very much discourage a 53' even with a day cab.

YES, there is a toll on the Verrazano bridge going into Staten Island. as far as tunnels go, it depends on which tunnel and which way your going, some tunnels, only allow trucks going one way only, plus nothing over 12'6". (I will give you an example, the Holland Tunnel ALLOWS trucks with with 3 axels to go into, N.J., but no trucks are allowed into N.Y., Tractor Trailers are allowed in the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, going into Manhattan BUT its tight , small lanes, so it depends on the tunnel and which way you are going.)

Thanks for the responses guys. Made it in and out ok. Thanks for the advice about ft hamilton pkwy. I ended up going that way and it was pretty simple. Glad I had just switched out my 53' curtainside for a 48' spread axle flatbed. The right turns onto 18th were a bit tight still though.

That right on 18th is a whole lot worse during regular business hours...buses and pedestrians tend to stack up there. Also, the car dealer on the corner of Cropsey and 18th tends to leave cars in bad places. In and out of there before 6am, you won't have much trouble at all.
