He says it is programmed at 500 but Freightliner told him it's putting out 400 and that it's normal to do that. He said he didn't understand what all they were trying to tell him about it but he already knows it won't actually put out all 500, although he was expecting more than 400. We may end up taking it back to Harrison even though we can't afford the down time. They actually want to help us but they're just so much further than Freightliner. This is not the first time we've delt with Freightliner. We've been familar with their shop for years. This is the biggest issue we've had. He's actually not thrilled that I am on here getting advice but he is so upset about the situation, I just wanted to help. Last six of the vin are FB6558.

Absolutely true and he considered all of that but he chose the Detroit for 2 reasons - fuel efficiency, and parts availability.

Maybe they are talking about how much hp is transferred to the ground?

I didn't think my Detroit in my glider was really operating at it's best either. After having Dusti over at Walcott go thru the ECM and change out some of the restrictive EPA settings in it and tweaking some of the other selections, I got roughly 3/4 mpg better and this engine will definately pull a hill. The EPA sure didn't have Detroit put on EGR, SCR, DPF nonsense, but they did have Detroit choke the engines back somewhat in the ECM. You get the ECM set back to what was intended, and it makes a whale of a difference. I wish I had done it when I got the truck, before it pulled the first load. Best $300 I have spent in a good long while.

Something ain't right. Even at 400 horse it still should go over 65mph. Truck has 3.58 gears in it so seeing 5.5mpg should not be very hard to achieve. And you should not lose 100 horse on the dyno. If you want to, see if you can get a shop to print out the trip report and the ecm parameters. Scan them and send them to me and i will take a look at them. I don't want to get into a battle of shops but i wonder if the timing could be a tooth off. It could happen to even the best techs.

If it has 3.58's in it, yep, it should easily bust 6 mpg on a bad day. I have 2.64 rears in mine tied up to an 18 speed. I run in direct (16th) at road speed. That is identical to 3.55 - 3.58 in overdrive. I have the DDEC IV 12.7 Series 60 at 500 hp also. I have never gotten below a 6.5 average since I got the glider last August. Average for last two months is mid 7's. Never have had it on a dyno to see what it is actually doing. But the one being discussed has to have some serious issues going on to pull in such poor mpg numbers.

Picked it up from the shop yesterday afternoon and just as we guess they said nothing is wrong with it and they charged us $466.40 for what they did. I'm not calling anyone a liar but it is fishy to me that they said they found nothing wrong with it but it hasn't gotten over 4.0 mpg since we we bought it and it was getting almost 6 mpg before he even got it a block from Freightliner. Then it reached nearly 9 mpg by the time it got home. My guess is they did find something and they fixed it & didn't want to deal with the Harrison over the payment even thought I trust that there wouldn't have been a problem with that. He said he still feels a miss in it but hadn't pulled anything with it yet so wasn't sure if the power had changed. He's in it now but I haven't heard from him yet on how it's performing. When he got it home last night he looked it over and said there is a fuel line that is extremely flimsy and he can easily pinch it between his fingers and hear an injector move. He said it's the only one that is that thin and flimsy. He is wondering if it is sucking shut and therefore causing the problem. I have all of the papers from the shop that you are wanting but since we were hit by lightning last fall my printer won't let me scan anything onto my computer. I think we are slowly getting things figured out but if you really want to see them I could fax to you. None of the company name information is correct on the paperwork. Apparently they are unable to read the paperwork that my husband filled out when dropping off the truck, and also unable to read the name and address from the huge letters on the side of the truck.

Day after we got it home from the shop the fuel mileage was back down to 4 and was still missing a feeling like it wasn't getting enough fuel. When he got done working that evening he opened the hood and started checking things. He checked the air-to-air. It had a leak. There was a loose hose clamp so he tightened it & that fixed that problem. Then he dissconnected that flimsy fuel line and it was dry. No fuel ran out. He flushed it with a little air and fuel started pouring out. Since then the truck has been running much better but not 100%. Thinking mayble the fuel line was plugged? Getting 4.7 mpg now. Still not what it should get but it's progress. No thanks to the professionals at the shop. He's going to check the fuel lines better this weekend when he has more time. Thank you for your interest. At this point it's just a guessing game. I guess the lesson is that nowadays you have to be a mechanic to own a truck because apparently the shops only go by what the computer says. Or at least that shop does. Also considering some of the options that cowpie1 mentioned. Really appreciate all of the help and advice. Will try my best to keep you updated but I might need a reminder now & then.

    I agree with you truckin,

I have a computer issue on my truck and when I go to talk to a shop about looking at it, there answer sounds more like a "By guess and by golly" method of troubleshooting...

And that don't fly with this boy......
