Right now I have a defaulted student loan (got computer certifications that are useless without experience unless you live in India), I'm on a rehabilitation program that will have me out of default after 9 months and after that I will again be able to qualify for student loans. I'm thinking about going to a community college for CDL training (or whatever its called). I'm sure it sounds like a good idea so far but here's the kicker I have a felony on my record for wire fraud back in 2005. I looked at company sponsored programs months ago but those want the felony to be 10 years old. I've seen some companies that offer employment if you have your CDL and no felonies in the past 3 years. I was wondering is this common? Is it easy to find companies that may not offer their own CDL training programs but are fine with felonies so recent? I basically don't want to get in another situation where I take on a debt that won't help my situation. I've been told this industry is very forgiving towards felons.
Is this a good idea? Student loans, criminal history, etc?

You are correct, the industry is very unforgiving towards ppl with felonies as well as certain things on your MVR.A community colledge is the way to go to obtain your CDL,that's how I got mine.I don't know what wire fraud is but this happened back in 2005.I would suggest keep looking around and call the companies you're most interested in.Tell them about your wire fraud and one day you'll hit the jackpot and find a company.

mje Thanks this. -
I don't want to be a kill-joy just honest, and before you go and spend lots of money and time I'm sure that you would appreciate that. You May be able to get a job driving after the felony is over 10 years old , provided that you have kept your record clean with no issues , and have maintained a strong and steady work history for that time , not hopping from job to job getting fired from jobs etc.
Also depending on how serious the felony conviction is and whether or not you can get a TWIC card/pass-port/hazardous material endorsement that will put road-blocks up for you. Some of the better companies are going to give you a pass no matter what cause they simply don't hire felons, and others will not because there are lots of other to choose from in the pool of potential employees that have not been in trouble with the law.
So , you see while its entirely possible and maybe probable that you can get a trucking job , its more than likely not gonna be a "good" trucking job. There will be some that will tell you different.... that they have all kinds of stuff/issues with their past and they got good jobs. But you have to remember "good job" can mean different things to different people.
Good Luck
And for the record....Carolina Cargo IS NOT what most consider a "good job"GoneButNotForgotten and mje Thank this. -
You need to make sure you are employable somewhere BEFORE you spend any money on a CDL. There are many schools who will happily take your money and get you a CDL, knowing all along that you are virtually unemployable in the industry because of your past. Look before you leap.
Tonythetruckerdude and DragonTamerBrat Thank this. -
Dude, sorry you did all of that and can't find an IT job, I bet has something to do with your wire fraud conviction - when I was in the business, we would never dare hire anyone with this type of conviction. That may sound harsh, sorry.
Here is an idea, you had your chance with student loans and for some reason I think that's a path that you should not travel down. I would think that you hitting the web and phone, calling the recruiters and asking flat out if they would hire you with a 7 years old conviction behind you because you may get lucky and find a couple companies who will, and pay for your CDL training. Why get in more debt and have to deal with more student loan crap, get into a company, put in your year to pay them back and then go from there. -
If the school wont go through the trouble of finding you the job up front, with no commitment from you....then run.
If they cant find you a job, dont waste the money.
