Hey ya'll. I'm going throu ATI trucking school and my backing skill are really getting good. I know i'm asking the same old question but i figured i'd ask it for myself. Where is a good place to start off? I'm in Virginia beach, VA. And I'm still a young buck that just got out of the navy sooo i have no problem doing whatever types of lifting(I'd actually prefer it). I want to get into flatbed but I don't know a lot of companies that do it, that hires on this side of the 95 that is. So far I've applied to: Werner, Transam, Averritt, Prime, McElroy, Con-Way, TMC(they don't hire on this side of 95). And I'm thinking about KLLM. Any feed back at all will be greatly appreciated!
Keep the sunny side up!
Old question different person. Where's a good starter company.

Look into Millis Transfer. The training has a small upfront cost, but you get much smaller classes which means more time at the wheel learning the necessary skills. There is just no comparing the 2-15 person Millis classes to the hundreds some of these other companies try to run through at a time. We run a lot of east coast so don't think your location would be an issue.
The company is big enough to keep you running and regularly replaces equipment, but small enough that you don't get lost in the noise.
I would steer well clear of any company that pushes leases on new drivers (Prime, CR England, and several others). The fact that they are willing, eager even, to put someone with no experience in that situation proves they don't care about the drivers. They are just looking for ways to take advantage and milk even more money out of new eager and naive individuals.
P.S. Take everything you hear with a grain of salt. Pretty much every big company out there has a referral bonus program, and many drivers are more than happy to sell you a bill of goods to see that little bump in their next check. Read all you can here, check out ripoffreport.com, suck up as much info as you can and fast as you can. Won't take long to swear off many companies from their reputations alone.
Just a little helpful advice from another veteran. 6 years active Army.Dajerk Thanks this. -

I've heard a lot of good things about Conway. I'd really consider giving them a shot. Nice equipment, good miles and you'll actually get to run 48 states. There's a lot of pretty country out here.

As far as flats, also give PGT a look. There's a thread in the flatbed forum.
As for reefer, give Van Wyk a call. They are very selective with rookies but the guy who started the thread on here was actually hired as a rookie out of Virginia. Hope this helps.
Thank you for your service and best of luck.
