A buddy of mine told me that he got DOTd at the 70 EB scale in Illinois near Effingham and that they put his truck on a brake dyno.
This is the first time ive heard of such a thing but its not hard to figure out what it does but im curious about what the standard is that they measure for and what constitutes a pass / fail.
Anyone have experience with one?
Anyone ever been on a brake dyno?

It would test for balance and efficiency

Do states have the authority to deviate from the CVSA standard inspections when dealing with carriers involved in interstate commerce? Without further proof, I'd say that he's pulling your leg. If not, then I'd suspect that he could have declined the dyno test and been on his way.
Any authority for a dynamometer test during a roadside inspection should have a written procedure to follow, and I'm not aware of one. -
I dont see any rason for him to make this up but...you never really know til it happens to you.
What i was kinda getting at was how states can arbitrarily pull some new test out of their hat for an inspection that not in Federal regs, I do remember hearing about Arkansas using an infrared device to check for cold nonfuntioning brakes a few years ago.
There was also that incident at Effingham where Illinois State Police and DEA (Im pretty sure) woke up drivers at truck stops to search their trucks, so to me ISP is about as interested in following Federal law as Minnesota is. -
must have been installed recently as i cant recall seeing one there last month when i ran the 70 route all the time from st louis to columbus oh

I think it is a portable unit. The Wisconsin State Patrol Motor Carrier Division has one.

Chatter on the CB past Effingham today said IL troopers were testing drones for speed enforcement. Can't find anything to support it though.

It's called a PBBT, Performance Based Brake Tester. If you'd like to see one, stop at the coop on WB 70 on the west side of Richmond, IN - I did last month (I passed the test BTW). There are a couple different types but if you Google Performance Based Brake Tester , you'll get the idea.

The new scale just north of Beloit, Wi on I-90 has this. One of our drivers had the truck and trailer brakes tested on it.
Here's a video.
