2007 780, can anyone tell me what the correct amount of free play is. I am having the bearings re-torqued and I want to be sure the shop does them correctly. Thanks.

should be 0 ftlbs and the inner nut
TheEnglishMan Thanks this. -
While there in there tell them to throw away the spacers that are between the bearings. Or the bearing mite spine on the spindle like mine did. And the spindle cost me 1400 to have a guy come to the house cut off and weld new on and I did the tear down and install new bearings, race, seals.
.004 end play with a dial gauge.TheEnglishMan Thanks this. -
Jetsr6, interesting you mention the spun bearing. Last week we had a wheel seal blow, TA in North Bend WA did the repair. Tech said that the outer bearing looked as if it had spun and there was a slight ridge on the underside of the spindle. I felt the ridge and it didn't feel that bad. Didn't replace the bearings, just cleaned everything up and put it back together with the new seal. Done about 4000 miles since and all seems so far ok. I check for leaks and accessive hub temperature at each stop, as yet nothing out of the normal. Had a bit oif water contamination in the axle oil so I got a box service at Speedco and had some Lucas added, not sure if that was a good idea or not. To add the Lucas i mean. The axle temperature reading is a touch higher since the oil change but I think that is the Lucas. Before it was just pure synthetic, now it's 2.5 gallons of synthetic plus 0.5 gallons of Lucas.

If you have the spacer cone in there, the torque is 250-350 ftlbs., tighten to get the nut retainer to fit, never loosen. That hub was designed to eliminate human error from affecting the bearing freeplay, just slap it together and go, says the engineer. If the nut isn't tight against the bearing upon disassembly, check the cone carefully, if it has a sharp ridge on the end, the effective length has changed, and it won't provide the correct freeplay, replace or eliminate it.

We have the spacer, i saw it. When I watched the TA tech reassemble the hub I'm pretty sure he torqued the inner nut to 250 ftlbs, then rotated the hub 90 degrees, torqued again and then repeated one more time. He then backed the nut off 1/8 of a turn. Not sure what he did with the outer. Or maybe I got that round the wrong way, can't remember it was the end of a very long day.

So much for eliminating human error.

Check out WWW.COMNET.COM for more info on preset hub assemblies.
