Hello everybody! I have been reading this forum for a while now and find it to be very informative. I am looking for a career change and I have a couple of questions.
A little about myself: I have spent almost 32 years in the commercial printing industry until I got laid off in 2009. I have not been able to find work since then.
I have always wanted to get into trucking and now is as good as time as any. I do not ever expect to go back into printing as I have had enough of that
business. I live in Los Angeles and I have been here all my life. I look forward to listening and learning from every one hear and I appreciate any help I can get.

#1 I am 55 years old and in good physical condition and I was wondering is 55 considered to old to start out as a driver?
Is there any bias towards older students?
#2 Can someone recommend a good training school in southern California? I would prefer somewhere around Los Angeles if possible.
#3 What kind of learning can I do on my own to better prepare me before I get into formal training?

I graduated from Dootson in Arcadia about a week ago. Good school, one-on-one instructors, I liked it. I have been hired by Schneider and start orientation on Sept 11th. Any questions feel free to ask.

You can get the CDL manual from the CA DMV website and start studying that to get your CDL permit, which is just taking a written test at the DMV and getting a DOT physical. This is a good first step.

Thank you for the reply. I have one more question which is how long did your training take from your first class to the time you got your license?
Once again thanks for the info.

There is no set time table at Dootson, you go when you want to.

I took 28 lessons, which are 30 minutes long. I finished the whole thing in 2 weeks. From getting my permit to taking my tests at the DMV. 14 hours of total lessons, which can be done at your speed, the instructor tells you when you are ready to test at the DMV.

    • [*]#1 Most have physicals, take the DOT physical and if you pass that someone will accept that - many of them
[*]#2 Only from Oklahoma Redneck Association
[*]#3 Go to a company-sponsored site, you have definitely better instruction as they have a pool of working drivers to pull from.
[*]#4 Rules, Regulations, Laws, Cases & Statutes, FMCSA, DOT, DMV, and preparation for dispatcher: SOB
[*]#5 Your own work, whatever you can find .....

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and dozens of other agencies & rules ~ you will get Major Screw on DAC reports and I dont even know what they are but I have seen too much industrial to bother finding out, they are lye-sheets that need to go in the laundry,..... they are -> Zamora v. Elite Logistics and that kind of thing

Hey sadwar, how did you get hired at Schneider?
Their hiring rules must be different now.
Just got off the phone with recruiter Kimberly Hardy, who told me I need a min. of 160 hours of training to be considered for hire!
I don't get it, any ideas?

    That post is pretty old.
You can do real well with System Transport. Contact them about accepting your CDL school. You can also check the website trans-system.
