I saw an ad for some company that does container and dry van work. Would you say hauling containers is good job for new drivers? It looks like easy work. Drop and hook mostly? This company pull those 40' containers. Anybody here have experience with containers? This is a local job BTW. Pay is hourly.

Get a good Tractor problem free. If it's local, it's good. The bad deals are the mountains runs that wear your tractor and consume most of the fuel. See how much they pay.
-
If he is looking for work as a DRIVER the wear on the tractor and consumption of FUEL should not be a real concern.
-
Yea, missed that that company driver part.

If your a white guy driving a container you are going to be racially profiled.
peterd, Chinatown, rockee and 1 other person Thank this. -
When running containers you need to be real good at pre trips a lot of the times other drivers take lights off of trailers and swap them out with thier bad lights. Equipment is usually in poor shape since people figure why should I get it fixed its getting on a train and il never see it again things like that. Yes running containers is good work usually if you live in a bigger city you are able to get home every day and it usually pays better than van or reefer

Halfburn, that depends on the region. You are right that this business is controlled by certain race groups. In Miami, the cubans control who enters and who doesen't, in New York and New Jersey is the sopranos type. In Savannah GA, it's the blacks, in Houston, it's the Mexicans, also california, in Seattle it's the Asians and Alaskans so yes, in the past, only whites had the right to many jobs decades ago so it's a mayority and minotity thing. If hes white, he should be allright in New England.

At least with the 40' containers, they're easier to make turns with and you don't have to worry about tail swing. They easy to back up?

When i go to port of riviera beach just north of west palm beach florida, thay inspect the chassis and make sure that all lights work, even the lic. plate lights. They wont let you out and you have to give them a pre trip sheet that thay give you. After 5pm, the mechanics leave and they ask you in case you have a light out, to take one from the dead line lot and change it. Just write the bad light you got in a sheet of paper. You will get the ticket so inspect the chassis it that will give a DOT the excuse to stop you!

Afraid not. You need a lot of skill to do that.
