Does your friend know how to partition her hard drive so she can have both XP and Vista on it and dual boot? That way, you have the best of both worlds. I have XP and Vista on this laptop. Haven't gone back to XP more than twice but it's still there if I want/need it.

Yeah, I don't like it, either. It's like a lot of things that don't last like things used to. I call it "planned obsolescence" - they're designed to fail sooner so you'll replace them and spend more money :biggrin_25513:

I redid a couch from the 1970s for a fortune but you can't buy them like that any more so, yeah, I KWYM :biggrin_25519:

Exactly, First Cav. I think back to when everything was DOS and shudder to try to think of teaching my mother how to use THAT!!! Windows made things SO MUCH EASIER for the average Joe and appealing to the masses is what it's all about. After all, people seem to have more money than brains these days -- or credit. :biggrin_2552:

Microsoft got lucky - right time, right place. You can hate them all you like but they did a TON of good for the computer world and, as Cav said, things wouldn't be where they are today without them.

I have XP on my laptop that I use for programming. The Vista thing is for the house, mainly for games, internet and stuff like that. I'll keep Vista on the PC, just because I feel like part of what I purchased was the new operating system. I need to get in and figure out what is causing it to crash and to hang up. I'm not a Microsoft hater, I'll see if I can work this out. I guess it took 20 years, and now I see what a lot of people are talking about. I guess I've been lucky with MS up to this point.

ROFL, now thats funny! Cav, don't feel bad. I didn't take keyboarding in High School, I took programming. Remember the double floppy drives? Apple 2E was what I learned on. LOL Yeah, I'm a dinosaur when in comes to computers too.

But, learning basic, really helped me in my current profession. I wouldn't have given that knowledge up for the world. LOL

I can debug html so fast your head would spin. :biggrin_2559:

I was just getting ready to tell my story.

The first real computer I bought was a Tandy 1000 from radio shack. It cost over $1000 dollars. No hard drive, maybe 256K ram. I can't remember now. Had to put in 1 floopy to boot, another floppy for the operating system, and if I wanted to save something, put in a blank floppy. The first thing I ever did was learn what FORMAT meant, the hard way. After I figured out how NOT to destroy the operating system disks, I would sit for hours typing useless basic code to make the screen blink and the PC Piezo buz with high low wails. If I knew then what I know now, I would have just invested in Microsoft with that 1000 dollars.
