I have just escaped from Tarp Hell.....went back to tanker work. Flatbedding is tough work, and the pay sucks. You get no better pay than dry van, and the chances of losing something off your truck is a lot higher than with a dry van. Most companies pay like $20 or $25 to tarp a load, which is a joke. To do the job the right way, it takes the better part of an hour to tarp the load, then at the other end, you have to untarp, fold the tarp, and stow the gear. All that work for even $40 would be a joke. Then you are out in the bad weather, tarping or untarping, while dry van drivers are in a building, out of the weather, doing their work. All of this hassle, with no extra pay to show for it, is a bad choice.

I had 2 trucks until recently in swift flatbed. Flats pay better than van at swift. no it isn't a ton of tarping but you will tarp. Gotta start some where!

As far as customers go. Flat at SWIFT is pretty much monday thru friday unless you fall into a drop and hook situation and that happens more often than tarping. Flatbed customers treat you much better than van customers. 100% truth there. You have more leeway with your appointments than van freight.

Planners at swift plan your loads. There are a select few Flatbed planners and you can get to know them. And again they treat you much much better than van planners which there must be over a 100 of them.

I know a lot about Swift. So if you have any questions just ask. I would say go flatbed I did.

you posted in the wrong forum but one more thing. In 6 months don't lease a brand new tractor from them. If you want to move over to the owner side of things ask for a used tractor that is lease PURCHASE only. Thats how I got my start. I paid it off hired a driver that I trained. And got another tractor. I have 3 trucks now and moved my business to another company.
