Smoke test once a year, I've heard about roadside tests but very rare. DEF delete can not be seen with diagnostics, they must search the truck to see the box, if it's deleted from the ECM it's quite hard to find out.

In Finland most of the companies have 5 trucks or less, 30 trucks is big here and 100 very rare. I've heard some 30 truck companies buying ECM tuning for fuel economy.

Bosch's CP4 system is having its share of issues with the US fuel. The pump breaks down then ruins the injectors.

The CP4 system was supposed to be better at maintaining rain pressure since it is a dual piston pump versus the Cp3's design. The CP4 is also timed. Its supposed to be able to somewhat sync up witn the injectors firing to maintain steady rail pressure. Its also a cheaper pump to build. I dk how much cheaper it is for the OEM but I know through GM parts its $100 less than a Cp3.

VW and Bosch's cylinder pressure sensing glow plugs are pretty neat. They analyze the pressure and temp in real time to decide how much fuel to inject and when.

Is there a possibility that we will see a modified version of this engine in North America in the future. From my understanding both the DEF and EGR systems are there to reduce NOx production. The downside of EGR is that it recycles the exhaust starving the engine of oxygen and therefore not as much power produced and less fuel efficiency. The downside of DEF is that it costs and having to find availbility which is improving.

I realize that we can't get rid of the DPF under current rules so it would have to be added on to the exhaust system. But in my brain I would imagine that if the EGR is removed then you would get cleaner combustion in the engine and therefore the DPF would be used less and therefore fewer problems with it. The DPF and the EGR seem to cause everyone problems not the DEF system.

So if I am not completely out to lunch I see it as no EGR = less crap in the exhaust and therefore less use of the DPF, improved mileage which will offset the increase cost in the DEF (i think someone said earlier 6% usage to diesel). If I take my 5.5MPG and $4.25 diesel I run at .77 cents per mile. If I took usage at 10% of DEF it would add around 0.06 cents per mile. In order to make up for the increased cost of DEF I would need to see around 6MPG in the new engine. Do you think this is feasible at all, if it is I would buy that engine.

Iveco says they will reach Euro 6 without EGR, with very efficient DEF system and DPF. Euro 6 should be the same as current US emissions. I think other manufacturers will follow Iveco, EGR is real problem for every manufacturer.

They are meeting it with the off road as well.

Sisu will also be meeting it with no egr as will duetz

that would be a very good trade off for me; EGR DPF VGT are nothing but troubles plus you have the back pressure fron the DPF so i would like none of that stuff;the DEF consumption for EPA2010 is between 2 and 3 % of fuel consumption but even if you go higher without all that crap is still good cause you have the reliability;you will end up bying more def but you will run the truck with no major problems
