I secured a WIA grant at first to pay for trucking school but then I realized it would pay for a lot of other things. I ended up picking a Mechanical Engineering Technology
associates degree at this college called Texas State Technical College. I'm working on getting everything ironed out right now. There is a lot of hassle and red tape.
My question is in regard to having a job during this whole thing. The woman that works for TWC is of course a typical low IQ, worthless, apathetic government employee.
So I am unsure if the little she does know is factual. When I asked her if I could get a job AFTER starting school she told me yes but it can ONLY be part time and she didn't
say it but I am assuming it should also be low income as well? Is that true?
The college program doesn't start until 8/13 and student housing applications don't start until 6/13. I am afraid if I get a job in the meantime that the fact that I have
a job will cause the grant to cancel. Because you have to be unemployed in order to get the grant and until 8/13 when everything is signed and done the grant is in effect on hold.
I'm asking you guys here in this trucking forum because mainly the only people who have any experience on this subject are truckers who used the grant for school.
Can any of you shed a little light on the subject please??

The WIA isnt exactly for people that are unemployed.. they use the word underemployed meaning making less than you did before the economy took a crap. Also depending on your situation you cannot make more than 11,170 for a family of one or $15,130 for a family of two, so in conclusion.. yes you can take a job but make sure you don't go over those amounts or WIA will not help you.
amiller Thanks this. -
I used WIA for school also, the only thing they required was that I checked in with the program head every week via email or phone call as to how things were going. There was not a stipulation as to whether I could work or not. I believe some of the other guys in class that had WIA had jobs at the time though. Google it, ask someone else at the office, or maybe call a different Unemployment Office in the state and ask.

I recently used WIA to get through truck school in Charlotte, NC so my knowledge is good for NC. There were several guys that had jobs that also were granted WIA for trucking school and some went to CPCC for associates degrees. In their situations they were considered underemployed. For many people, being unemployed is the reason why they're applying for WIA. That was my reason as I have been unemployed since October of last year. I was informed by the North Carolina Employment Security Commission that I could have a job during trucking school but that I would only get one opportunity to successfully complete school within 4-6 weeks. Since I was still eligible to receive unemployment benefits during school, it was a no-brainer for me to stay unemployed to concentrate on school. In your situation, I would verify that working will not effect your WIA eligibility. Hope all works out for you!

Ok I just want to get it 100% correct. I really want to get a job its hard living on no income but I know this is my last chance to go to college in my life I dont wanna mess it up.
So wait after I get the grant and Im living on campus or whatever I can only make 11,490.00 dollars per year? Or what works out to $957.00 per month or $6.91 per hour and If I find a job that pays more than that while Im going to school they will cancel the grant?? I cant live on that.
And I cant ask the woman at the workforce commission my PSR or whatever. I dont want them to misconstrue my asking and get the impression Im not looking for a '
job and cancel the grant.I used to make $40,000 per year.. so are you saying that I am allowed to make anything up to the amount I got paid in the past but no more? Or I cant make any more than $11490.00 per year?? Which please? Thanks.

hope you are getting unemployment to tide you over.
Because if you get a job now, you loose all those bennies. Unless you can find something and prove you can't find equal or better employment compared to what you had before. -
