I am guessing we have not heard from my buddy dcodd for awhile because he is busy. I want to state for the record that Roehl's Driver Training Center is top shelf. I would do that part all over again.
I am still looking for an answer as to whether I am the only person who has a problem spending 2 - 10 days shifts in a truck with another person for 23.5 of the 24 hours in a day. And how do they do it at Prime for a few months? Am I crazy or is this unnatural or what?
Roehl is probably among the better ones of the large carriers, but big businesses are just run differently from small businesses and therein laid the problem for me.
Impression of Roehl so far

My, how only three weeks changes the attitude. Sorry you didn't make it, jasonb. I wish you the best.
P.S. .. I hope you paid for your training up front. If not, they will stop at nothing to get it. And, check out that interest rate they charge you for their "services". Makes a credit card look cheap. -
Sound familiar? All you newbies pay attention. Be very careful what you sign up for. This post was only a few weeks ago and now he's gone.
-
Well, a newbie has to start somewhere. I actually remember those days with fondness, albeit a different era with different rules (much laxer rules, I should add). There was an exhaustive study done by some college somewhere that came up with the conclusion that by 2011, most drivers would be "aged" (I don't remember specific ages, so I'll just put it at that) and that the pool of newer drivers was going to be short.
The study concluded that a young person looking to get into a career would find a job in low-level management or similar occupation making 50k a year finding that much more appealing than starting off the trucker's life at -- 30 whatever k per year.
I read about people having trouble at ALL of these different companies. So what are we going to do, tell them not to drive at all? If they don't start at Roehl or some other big company, WHERE are they going to start? I hate ALL of the big companies I have driven for, excepting the one I am driving for now. Yet - if I were a person just now looking to get into trucking - where driving was my dream job and I would do whatever it takes to get a foothold into it - well, I would probably be doing the same thing as the rest of these people - pick a company that seems right and just do it.
Getting sent home ain't no fun, either, but I just want to take a moment and encourage new or wannabe drivers. The beginning of this trip might not be easy or fun - or maybe it can be - what I do know is, it gets better after you've been around for a while, get some wisdom and experience. I don't recall starting any new endeavor as being easy or a cake-walk, but I do remember them being a CHALLENGE, something I wanted to conquer and overcome. It's all a matter of perspective..... -
Thundermunky--are you going to their school? Just assuming you would be if your going to Marshfield! I am guessing you are--otherwise you would do orientation in Atlanta. As the last man said it all too well--drivers gotta start somewhere. The pros and cons of company's are what we all learn from. Its a shame that we have to find out this way but all in all--most the things i heard about Roehl have been impressive. I guess i wait to see if i get approved! Good luck to all and Be safe out there!

I believe the whole problem is that people come to trucking because they think it is an easy brainless job, and they can make make money sitting on there bum. People are always looking for easy money..
Just my 2 cents. -
Dennis,
You make three weeks with a trainer sound like an eternity. In another post you spoke favorably of your trainer's teaching abilities. Perhaps you could have remained focused on his strengths, and NOT his weakness. Your decision to leave the white collar world for blue collar work probably required greater personal adjustments than you imagined.
Best wishes.. -
I like your attitude. I am going to roehl to train soon, end of this month or sometime next month. Depends on how fast I can get my medical stuff in order.. I hope I can get you for a trainer, you sound like a fun trainer.lol. Or hope all trainers have you outlook.
I have never driven truck yet as a professional, but I will tell you why I choose Roehl. They are not ripping me off for the cost of training. There is a training center 5 miles from where I live, but they want $3000.00 more to train me, and another 65 miles away who also want $3000.00 more to train me. ???? Are the higher priced places that much better, I really doubt it ! But I could be wrong.?
So presently they are offering me the service that I want at an affordable price I can pay.
But I can not comment on what will happen after that, all I can hope is that I can work my way through all the misnomers to make a living.
Life is a journey, and it has to start somewhere. Make it start some place where you are comfortable. -

who are you working with, where did you go for training
