    Old terminology: EOBR
    New terminology: ELD

So what the heck is there, assuming I can afford to buy more than one device, to keep me from having 2 ELDs and using one for a few days and then unplug and hide it and use another for a few days or even change 'em up every day?

And just for the record here's my 2 cents about ELDs, I feel that if these are foisted upon us they should be 100% automatic. I should not have to touch the thing EVER to change duty status or whatever else you guys do with these things. After all aren't they sold to us as making things easier?

They need to show logs for past 7 days . An unplugged unit will show no data . They also record odometer readings and location . How do explain one having a 3 day gap and 1500 additional miles ?

I have mechanical fueled CAT. No ECM!

ELD not in use would be disabled/insulated from GPS/cell signals either by metal shroud or internal battery removal.
I never used a ELD so I'm just guessing and asking questions here.

There's got to be a way to enter previous off duty time when you first turn on the machine, right?

Or if there's no info just fill out a paper log that says you laid over for x many days in x town USA to make DOT happy because ELD unit was out of service. You're supposed to have paper log as back up right?

I will learn the ins and out of these contraptions and do what I want when I want for my own safety and health and make the record look like DOT wants it to to make them happy. And I'm sure other drivers are already doing this.

That's why I like loose-leaf log books. Enough said on that one.....

I would hazard a guess and say that most old school operators around are mulling over the same things as well.... My thought is that I wouldn't do much mulling around about my thoughts, ideas, or intentions on a public forum.

Well safety is my first concern and bitterly clinging to my freedom is my second which should put at ease most snooping trolls looking for a gotcha on this board.

I am an inconvenient anomaly in the DOT's convenient statistics used to justify 24 hour surveillance in the name of safety. I never ever crashed in 28 years and since fuel is over $1/gal. and the 55 mph states have jacked up the limits I don't even get speeding tickets anymore.

Semi ...... You will be told to buy a new truck, I guess.....

Are most of the eobr units plug and play. Or does the ECM need to be flashed or updated ? Has anyone installed one of these pos .

Has there been some movement on the status of mandating EOBR's lately? Last I knew was that they didn't provide a funding mechanism for enforcement / compliance auditing in the transportation bill, thus it has been shelved for now and no mandate is in effect. Did that change? Thanks.

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say: the cost. They won't be cheap.

Also, it's probably illegal to have more than one, or to modify/disable/destroy/render one inoperable.

Just do your research and find the one you "like" the most. they all work a bit differently, if you have your own authority you can set up your unit anyway you like. There are recommendations at this point, but no regulations on settings.
