I also agree with your comments about the draconian 55 mph speed limit in CA. That's why whenever I'm hauling to or from the southern LA basin area I almost always prefer to cut straight south using the 95 right after the check station, then take the 62 and the 177 down to the I-10. The miles are about the same, but there are only two low passes and beautiful 2 lane roads the whole way that you can cruise at 60-65 without incident.... although the last time through I did see a CHP car. Lot's of areas for truck parking on the 95 and especially at the 95/62 junction.

Heck, I've even told my Brother-In-Law to watch out for those CHPers in that area once when he was getting ready to travel to Arkansas in his Corvette. And what happened? Yup, he got a ticket for 90mph on that very downhill on 40 into Needles. I guess some people are just plain oblivious to stuff like this.
But 81 in a 55?? Dang dude!! The speed limit is the speed limit. No matter what your belief is. As far as California goes. I've always heard that staying under 64 on the main interstates and not driving like a jack-wagon, you'll most likely never get bothered by the CHP.
I also just heard from another driver that one of the other reasons the speed limit is only 55mph for trailers and rigs is because supposedly CA can get the maximum Federal Funding for it's highways. I kinda call BS on that one, because CA has some of the worse roads in the US now. And if that were true, 15 would be at least 3 lanes from Barstow all the way to the NV state line each way (one would think anyway).
Anyway, not to pick on you, Nomad. Heck, we all have done some and have gotten caught doing stupid stuff or speeding. Just your turn to take a beating from some of us. -

Yes, they call that a "deductible". Some of the insurance companies are about $50 per month and have a $200 deductible per incident. I'm considering a company that is about $50 per month with no deductible. On the one hand I'm incident free and certainly don't "plan" on having an incident. On the other hand I realize I'm not perfect and circumstances could arise that could get me "tagged"...
