O/O Research Questions

    Disclaimer: I know I am not experienced enough to be considered worthy of having the title of "Independent Owner Operator," however, I am just getting some research.

    I almost got busted in Cali for being over-length (65' max, i was 79') since I was pulling a 53' van and my wheel base was long. I however notice people pulling 53' trailers and they have those studio sleepers in back. I would like to eventually own one of those rigs, but I also don't want to get a ticket for being over-length.

    Question is: do I have to get an annual permit if I want to have that kind of set up?

    Well if your going to be an o/o first and foremost better stay out of Cali. Freight don't pay to begin with and you have too many hoops to jump through. Never been there never will go there. My question is how did you get busted at 79ft? My 272 hooked to a 53 is right around 70 overall.

    I didn't know they had a length law. I used to run into there with a 53' refeer and 272" wheel base tractor, not sure what my overall lenght was. With my 48' Step and the fifth wheel plate all the way back I was right at 73' overall length, never had any trouble out there.

    There are plenty of people with houses that run 53'ers, probably just some bridge laws to deal with.

    Secondary roads have overall length rules still, that would be where he got busted I think.
    I run to Cali, and do good both ways pulling RGN freight. Mind, that may well end at the end of this year, who knows.
    Just keep an eye on the length rules on those back roads, and you will be fine.

    That's pretty much what happened. And to answer your question 379 my truck was designed for over sized loads like I-Beams and stuff like that.
    And yes, I know living in Cali sucks anyways but I hope on rectifying that in the future (if the Mrs. won't mind that is). :biggrin_25511:

    Another question if ya'll don't mind and it's concerning authority. While I wouldn't mind too terribly much to run under someone else's authority like Landstar or Road Runner, is it worth the time/money to get my own?

    Disclaimer: I am just getting as many questions answered early on as I can while I'm a young trucker, I am thinking long term here.

    Read the sticky in this section about authority etc. It has all the answers you could want.
    As to whether it's worth it to you or not, that is a personal choice. What works for one doesn't work for another, and so on.
