Just got a call from a customer they do land drilling with skidders that are center steer. DOT has shut them down because they don't have a way to secure the machines from steering. They have 4 1/2 chains and 4 ratchet binders per machine. I've hauled bucket loaders with clevis rams you just drop a pin in but don't always put them in.

Anyone else ever heard of this?

I have never seen the exact regulation it falls under, but anytime I ever hauled articulating machines I put those lock bars in place or I have even put two shackles on each side then secured them together with a chain and binder. I always thought have SOMETHING there was better then having nothing.

I have moved a few of these and their is a metal bar that goes between the pivot joints. More of a safety thing i would say. Many of the front end loaders out their have the same set up.

I too have heard this from the"doodle buggers"! I've hauled them things off and on for many years. I also haul articulating wheel loader & have been stopped plenty over the years, and have never been told that I need a chain in the center! These things are pretty much homemade & don't have lock bars on them!!

When I hauled 4 wheel drive tractors, I had the bars to put in, but I also put a chain on with a half hitch and it kept the tracotrs from moving, never had a problem.

Maybe double up the chains and show there isn't a factory solution to keep them from articulating. Or maybe make yourself up some sort of gizmo to help yourself out

Why can't they be secured as two separate units?

I understand they have 4 wheels, but I would think you could cross the chains on the articulating side,

I can't see how an articulating machine would articulate when chained down anyhow.. I mean if the front is chained down and the rear is chained down I can see how the middle can still pivot.. I operate a front end articulated loader at work and as soon as the machine is shut off you can't move the machine side to side... Once the hydraulic pump shuts off it stops the hydraulic steering.. I understand other machines can operate differently on how the steering works but I think it would take a lot to machine is pivot while chained down on a trailer... Especially if you chain it at the pivot point..... I know most machines have lock bars on them but even if you don't have that bar it's no different then using chains in the center on each "section" of machine...

Unless it's a regulation I wouldn't even bother... I just think it's very impossible to have these machines pivoting while on the trailer chained down... I know that when we have our machines picked up the guy doesn't use the lock bar.. He just throws chains on the front of machine, rear of machine and I believe he has 1 or 2 in the center... BTW we have L150G Volvo loaders...

An 8 point pull. 2 forward, 2 rear, 4 where it articulates pulling forward and rearward (is rearward a word?). It should satisfy DOT regs.
