when it comes to 1 ton pickups you do not need a cdl to pull a horse trailer unless you are commercial. If you are a private individual and cross state lines and buy a horse for yourself you do not need cdl. As for DOT here in ohio they can pull you over in your car and do an inspection. I have seen the Ohio State Highway Patrol set up in Lisbon Oh doing so.
Horse trailers are out of control...

Holy smokes, this guy should not be driving. We're not talking about a pipe extending 2 feet out, we're talking about a trailer. No way is that translucent. This is in broad day light. I don't know how he kept a straight face in court, much less the judge...

Calm down a bit people, before the mods come in here and newspeak all your comments.

On that news blog, the comment left is out of control.
I work in this niche industry. There ARE unscrupulous transporters out there. But the above-board companies take great care to follow the DOT rules and laws of the country. And, we take concerned and detailed measure to take care of the cargo we ship.
Horses of all types are shipped this way, (from back yard pets to horses worth millions of dollars) in big rigs such as this. There are ways to configure the trailer to make it the most comfortable for the horses being shipped. Drivers and attendants will check on the animals at lest every few hours to make sure they are well and happy. There is a LOT of detailed care associated with shipping a horse long-distance.
We have a trailer this size, and we often ship (if they are horses, not ponies) about 10 of them. They fit in there quite comfortably!
chompi, where are you, lol! -
He is just an example of the mental gymnastics people will use to avoid fault. Seems it would have been much easier to just man up and admit he wasn't paying attention. And I would bet that he doesn't even realize how out of place his rant was in the midst of people mourning a lost friend. He might as well have stood up at the wake and ranted there.

Yup, DOT in IA is big on stickin' it to the 1 ton dually... Buddy of mine got a no log ticket in IA at a road side DOT pull over... North IA DOT officer told him that even his wife needed a log on the trip to the grocery store... BS in my opinion... but it IS Iowa.

Several states have got an interest in the horse trailers and blank trailers anymore.
There is an outfit in my area that buys and sells horses and equipment, delivering all over the country. You think this is commercial or not?
They do not run signs, commercial insurance, logs or anything. -
Oh hell, I didn't realize that was Ron Mealancon's blog that was being linked to. You can go to most news sites in and around Richmond and read his comments on the articles. Half the time he is pushing that blog, and the other half it just seems that he likes to read what he wrote on the internet. He was in court recently for uprooting road signs and blocking the parking lot of a high school with them.

Sounds like his logic is screwy. He was way too close to the trailer to begin with. He would have hit it even if it didn't stick out two feet. It felt like most of the blog was directed at the insurance company not wanting to help him with his litle campaign. Really? I can understand why they didn't want to fund his grassroots campaign.
Also, the only time I've had issues is when someone blocked the left lane of a divided highway waiting to cross or make a u-turn. It was dangerous and we had to come to a dead stop because of how much stuck out. -
