I'm actually at North Harris, Lone Star College/Transportation Institute in Spring. Its a good school, good instructors and small classes so you get lots of reps. I take my road test at DPS on the 14th. You shouldn't have to spend money out of your pocket, when you go and talk to them ask about the Hazle Wood Act. It paid for mine and I got a General Discharge, so I'm sure you can get it. And I'm looking into driving oil also and Sunoco Logistics will hire you from an accredited school like Lone Star so I'm gonna give them a call when I get my tanker and hazmat after I get my CDL A license. They are the only company that I have been able to find that will haul crude oil and hire you straight out of school.

Congrats! You're college should have some free training available for you. Make sure and check with them. Work Force or other programs. Also vet programs. Friend of mine just went through Weatherford College and used his. Go out of Army in 79'.
Plenty of work. Weatherford Frac has yard we work with a lot in Bryan. Trican has Houston offices. Many of these companies will train you to drive. Baker Hughes. Don't plunk down your own money for cdl classes. Good luck. -

Well I've got applications in to frac companies, no word yet. Lonestar is pushing back the cdl class date again. Not starting Monday anymore now it looks like wed or Thursday....hope it doesn't get pushed back anymore I just want to start this class, get my cdl and start working!

If you can afford it, I would encourage you to pay for the schooling and get it done. I know things are different in the oilfields, but companies like to see people who are self motivated and willing to invest in themselves. When i started driving, I paid my own way. Not only did I actually get in a truck months ahead of those waiting for company paid training, but my pay rate was enough more that I recouped my investement in 6 months. With the money that is in the oilfield jobs right now vs anything else you can do, that schooling cost is chicken feed...imo.
The simple act of taking the initiative on your own to pay for your schooling could easily make the difference between getting hired by one of the best companies vs a lesser company...with a pay rate to match.d o g and The Tech-1 Thank this. -
Right on Arky... I cant wait to start!
Does anyone know if the frac companies offer cdl reimbursement like some f the trucking companies do? -
I understand that what I'm saying is opposite of what Big Duker says and he likely has forgotten more than I'll ever know about oilfield companies. But that is my observation in general. I would definitely agree with Big Duker on one thing though. Anything that the gov't will do for you, go after that. Your a veteran and you served this country. Take any and every benefit that you can get your hands on. You have earned it.
If you haven't already asked..or already know. The school most likely has someone (financial aid coordinator?) who you can talk to who will know exactly what is available to you as a veteran..and most importantly...how to get it.
Added: I'm pretty sure that I have seen reimbursement (to qualified applicants) available on some of the websites. -
