I have an offer to work for TMC running Flatbeds. Running around 2500 miles a week. I can take 26% per run or .35 cpm. How do i decide what pays better?

Just remember that when you DEMAND to get home and they accept a low $ load to get you there you take the HIT as well $ wise on %

One more thing to keep in mind with the percentage option. Every 30 days your performace will be reviwed and you can work your way up to over 30%. I think the percent option is great for people that want to work hard. If you want to just cruise and get by then take the CPM.

    the cpm pays better.

you don't get empty pay on percent. you also don't get screwed as the company can pay you anything they want. you don't get to see what they made.

Break the percentage rate down into cpm. Let's say you take a load 2500 miles. TMC is being paid 2.25/mile. 2.25/mile X 2500= 5625. You get 26%.
    5625 X .26= 1462.50. 1462.50/ 2500miles= .59/mile. Percentage looks good considering rates don't drop you below the .35 cent range.
Just remember to do your calculations. And keep good records. If it looks like the mileage rate would be better. Bring it to their attention. Most drivers probably don't keep up with the math. If your rate drops down to the mileage rate. Then ask if they can work with you to get some better paying loads.

With percentage pay, how does deadheading work? Seems as long as the company is able to keep you moving with minimal deadheads it would work really well, but it wouldn't take too many longer deadheads to make cpm the way to go. Experiences with this issue?

It is in the best interest of the company to keep the dead head down to a minimum. On a percentage basis when they have a good day, you have a good day. When they are stuck in the wrong end of a crappy freight lane so are you. A company the size of TMC with there overhead, you can pretty heavily bet on the fact they arent running around at a $1.75 for too many days.

I would take the percentage deal as Camaro pointed out the differences. Is there anything that says you cant switch if you dont like the way it is going. Maybe you have some short hauls and do two a day - then you are really going to wish for percentage as I cant see TMC moving a flatbed for less than $450-$500.

percentage pay for flatbed is the way to get paid. but TMC percentage pay im sorry but to me it is a joke. if im gonna make 32% of what the load pays i wanna stay at 32% or move up and ONLY up i wanna know the fuel surcharge and what exactly the company is charging for the load not just some random number they wanna give me if i need proof i wanna be able to call the broker and verify the rate.

if it was any other flatbed company id say take percentage but ive heard some horrible stories from tmc

all you have to do is go to to billing and ask to see billing inv. they have to show it to you. why would you work for some one you didn't trust anyway. % is the only way to go. that is the only way anyone should be paid out here if you are driving.
