my truck is older, so i dont have that on mine. orientation is 2 days, i dont remember spending either of them outside, not for very long anyway. the 2nd day we went over chaining and inspection but dont think we were out there much longer than that. first morning is of course drug test and driving test. They used an automatic, which I had never used before so I was kinda nervous about it, but it was a simple test. I was the last one so we went out of the yard, the interstate is right down the road so we got on it, went to the next exit and came back.. that was it for the road. then they had an area in the corner of the yard where he had cones put up, and just said ok back it in. the days were pretty long, from like 630 - 5, but wasnt soo bad. the 2nd day (night) we slept in the trucks and wed morning had orientation on the truck themselves, maintenance goes over the truck with you individually, I had never driven a freightliner, or used a apu or an automatic truck, and most the buttons were wore off and not labled so beside just asking where everything was lol that was pretty much it. after that we got our dispatches and took off when we were each done. was told I'd only have this truck for a few weeks, tho that was in february so I'll start poking around to see when they're gonna retire this thing (hittin 920K on it) but theres no KY's in the yard so im hoping they'll get another batch and then Ill start pushing it again lol

About the same thing when I went thru orientation last month. Only difference is they had just added a backing test (no problem) and there was also a physical type of test, stepping up and down, lifting a weighted basket a certain number of times etc...nothing difficult. My orientation was in Tacoma.Dark_Majesty_06 Thanks this.

yeah there was a backing after the road portion, in a corner of the yard, backing between two trailers but you also had cones out so you didnt have like ALL the room ya wanted to turn the trailer, either way was pretty simple, and he wanted us to get out and walk completely around the truck once during the backup. same thing with the physical type test, had to lift a weight, a crate with weights in it onto a shelf and back onto the ground a few times, push and pull something in the weight room then i think they checked your pulse, dont remember exactly.

ah, do they run orientation on wednesday as well? the hotel itself didnt have anything really for the room, but you will have a packet there for orientation with all the paper work so you can get started on it before ya get there. if its late dont really worry you'll have time the first morning while people are taking turns doing the various tests, the rooms are pretty nice, theres a wendys, sonics, mcdonalds, subway i think and a bar type place all within walking distance, pizza i think too which is what we had our first day for lunch. breakfast doesnt start till like 6 and the first day starts at 630 so if ya want something to eat get down there early.

Well,
I finished orientation. I didnt know there would be so much "hand holding". For a company that only takes experienced drivers, so many rules and the stuff they go over in orientation, make you feel like your right back in trucking school. I don't agree with some of them.. but i dont own the truck or company, so ill just have to get used to it all. I was assigned a 2010 cascadia, it is a really nice truck. It was clean inside, outside and has more amenities than i will need. A few people from orientation got trucks that weren't clean and the ac wasn't functioning but one talk to the shop foreman and everything was corrected asap.
I enjoyed the safety meeting and then when the "boss" came down to talk to use.. I heard a phrase I thought i would never hear a single company use in my entire life. He told us.. " There will be times.. when WE are wrong." My jaw hit the floor, Ive never heard anyone come remotely close to saying they were or will be wrong.. So i was surprised.
Unfortunately, my fleet has no dedicated FM yet.. so were put on with a guy that already has 50 trucks.. So he is over worked and just isn't able to take care of our needs in a timely manner. What do you expect? He has close to 70 drivers and we all know.. each one of us have our own needs that need done yesterday. So i will just give him time and in due time, we will get our own FM who will only have 50 of us to work with.
Ultimately, this is trucking and I'm sure one day ill be happy as a lark and the next i should have quit last week. I have a family to support and if these folks get me home, get my the advertised miles when they can and my pay is correct. Ill be happy. I may drive a slow truck and have to send a message every time my truck goes in reverse but over all.. Its trucking. No one is perfect and never will be. Ill check back in from time to time but Ill post a review in around a year or so.. That should allow me to fully grasp the situation over here.
