I'm a Georgia native, and am looking to get into the industry. Millis seems nice because of the home time, location and the training from what I've read on this forum is top notch. What I can't seem to find is, how many miles do you turn in the average week, do you get paid weekly, do you really go into a region that is local to your living and how is dispatch? I'm wanting to make sure I do this the right way so it doesn't give me a sour taste on the industry. Also, how far is the hotel from the training yard at the Georgia school?

As far as miles it really all depends on how you manage your time and how hard you run. I run Midwest regional so I run about 2400-2800 miles a week. However I'm home every weekend. I know a couple guys who run 3600-4000 miles a week OTR. Right around 2800-3200 seems to be the average for an OTR driver. Yes you get paid every week. I have direct deposit so I get paid every Monday night/Tuesday morning. If you choose to have your pay put on your comdata card then you get paid the Friday prior. As far as driving where you live. If you are a regional driver you typically stay within a few states of your home terminal. OTR drivers will drive all states typically east of I35 including Texas and on a rare occasion Colorado and California. Like I said I'm Midwest regional so I run Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. Dispatch for the most part is pretty good. There are times when their communication skills are a little lacking. Also you gotta kinda prove yourself to them also and show them you are a worker. They keep you moving for the most part tho. As far as the hotel in Georgia and how far it is I'm not really sure. I went to school at the Trenton terminal but I'm sure someone on here can answer that for you. I've been with Millis almost a year. I went thru their school and did my time with the trainer and have been out here running on my own since July. I don't have many complaints. The trucks are top notch. Most of the other drivers here have been extremely friendly and helpful. Even Millis Drivers I have never met in person before have helped me out numerous times thru here. One thing with trucking is you have to be patient, flexible, and motivated. Things change all the time. Time management is probably the most important skill you need to have out here in order to be successful. Hopefully I've been able to answer most of your questions and I'm sure some of the other drivers will get on here and offer some things of their own also. I will say this. I was NEVER ONCE lied to about anything when dealing with the recruiter thru schooling and also with the trainer.Skydivedavec, JMD1828 and MTownZ Thank this.

That's an awesome post. I have been anxious about everything I have read and been told, trying to read between the lines sort of, but I keep seeing posts like this and every time I read it, it reconfirms what my guts keeps telling me, I made the right choice.
Thank you! -
The hotel for the Georgia school is one exit south of the terminal on I75. Holiday Inn is really nice. Buffet style breakfast is included and the food at the restaurant isn't bad either. The bartenders are friendly and they have happy hour from 5-7 every night. There are also alot of other restaurants and places like Wal-mart and Kroger nearby.

I live an hour NE of Cartersvill, kind of. Will they let me drive my personal car from home or do they prefer I stay in motel/hotel? What time in the morning does orientation start. And with a few years of experience how long does it last for experienced drivers?
-
U can drive a personal car... exp driver orientation is 3 days if I remember right
Milkchug Thanks this. -
If you have a valid CDL with exp. you have a 3 day orientation and road test ( you have to double clutch to pass ).
Milkchug Thanks this. -
Double clutch the whole road test or just show them I can? I don't double clutch that much. I can just hardly at all. Really only when I let RPM get too high to float it into next higher gear. I.e. get on ramps.

Whole road test with the instructors in WI and Oh, may be diff with the GA instructor not sure.
Milkchug Thanks this. -
I guess I will just have to brush up while I am still in this companies truck. Thanks again.
