Just pretend you have an Eaton Autoshift behind that Cummins, and it won't be an I-shift or M-drive, and leave it in that gear, with the Autoshift you place the selector in manual, with a manual transmission, you don't have to do anything.
It won't shake the driveline and won't take that much longer, after you reach the crest, then you upshift.
There is a reason for 18 speed manuals, and you just found it. 10 speeds really aren't good for really steep grades.

Jake shifting is when you let your foot off the pedal, allowing the jake to engage (just for a second), to reduce your rpm's faster, particularly when skipping gears. it's best to practice while empty or bobtailing...you'll get itokiedokie, Tracks and otherhalftw Thank this. -
Hahaha I anit never !!!!! Trucker Dan that ISX CUMMINS IS A LOW GEARED MOTOR BELIEVE ME. I. Know start out n 2 nd gear run the rpm up to 1500 -1600 upto 5 th gear then at sixth run rpms up to 1800-1900 those Cummings motors are low torque an will pull its butt off up steepgrades question is when was the last time u had that clutch adjusted ???? Cause if it's not adjusted correctly you WILL LOSE ALL YOUR PULLING POWER ESPECIALLY WITH A CUMMINGS ISX MOTOR YOU'LL KNOW IT NEEDS ADJUSTING IF BY LETTING OUT ON YOUR CLUTCH IF THE TRUCK Starts moving an your clutch peddle almost at the top when releasing it it should be moving closer to the floor those. Cummins motor are a beast stomp that go peddle you can't hurt that bad boy .hopefully this helps u out

Thanks for explanation SS on jake shifting.
My so called training came from my ol man hauling logs w/ a set of sticks in a 318 hp Detroit. You might say from the school of hard knocks. If I missed a gear you got a cuff up side the head.

PS FLOATING Gears or clutching if the clutch isn't adjusted right that's your problem an why u are. Loosin power an rpms faster give that cummins hell it'll take it an want ya to give it more hahaha

Hahaha you too huh my grand pappy taught me on the farm with 2 stick Mack an I only got smacked in the head one time grinding gears that marine ring on his hand left a not on my head to remember not to grind them gears old school how I learned yep then I thought I was somethin when I graduated to cab over 13 letter corn field Cadillac those were the great times hahaha
okiedokie Thanks this. -
Something's never change. My first real driving job was a Tri-Star Cornbinder.

Like Otherhalf said, I think you will have better luck floating. Just to reiterate, when you are on a steep grade shifting gears your speed will drop faster so that means you have to shift faster. If its a short, steep grade you have the option of just winding out and keep in the same gear until you have crested the hill.
Jake shifting I really don't recommend. Anytime you are shifting with the Jake engaged its going to throw you off. Not to mention spill your coffee! Also if your fan is running while you are shifting this will also drop your rpms faster. So if you hear your fan running then you will have to shift a little faster.
If you are worried or concerned about taking off on a steep incline from a dead stop, you can either let the clutch up half way until it just starts to engage and this will hold you until you start to accelerate. Just don't do it very long. Its ok to do for a brief second. Don't sit at the redlight like that. Especially if you own the truck! The other way you can do it is to just use your hand brake. Pull your hand brake down and take your foot of the brake. Now your feet are free to use on the clutch and the accelerator. Start to let off the clutch and release the hand brake accordingly. Make sure that once you are moving the hand brake is all the way up. A lot of times it doesn't spring back all the way up and this will cause you to ride your brakes. Just like leaving your parking brake on a little in your car.
No matter what truck you are in or driving if you are in the lowest gear at a dead stop its possible to take off without using the accelerator. You just have to let up on the clutch slowly.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
I run a Cummins with a 13 speed, if you over rev in low range the gears will hang. Try shifting around 1300 rpm and start in 3rd. The new ISX has torque at lower rpm, get off the clutch and ease on and off the throttle. Oh, and if you can't shift with the Jake on, turn it off.

Stop spending your time looking at the tach.
Do it by feel not by sight.
