I have a new CDL and medical card. I am looking to go with a company that trains beginners. I have read elsewhere that all these companies have you go through a dot physical regardless of whether you already have a medical card.

My question is, Can anyone tell me how the hearing tests are conducted by the various company doctors? Thanks.

Do you have trouble hearing? The doctor will stand like 5 feet away and whisper and want you to repeat what he said. But he whispers loud enough that unless you re very much hearing impaired you'll be able to hear him.

That's exactly what happened when I got my medical card. A job retraining service paid for the medical exam, and the dr. whispered so loudly that I was able to hear it in my good ear. I can't hear a loud whisper in my bad ear. What I'm worried about whether I will have to buy a hearing aid before I go through all the trouble of getting on with a company, taking the bus to wherever the classes are, and getting tested, just to get washed out. My worry is what the company doctors do when they test. Do they just go ahead and whisper fairly loudly, or will they be more rigorous so I won't be able to skate by.

And the whole point of course is that I'm so broke I can't afford a hearing aid, because if I could I'd just go ahead and get it. They're so expensive. I need income to buy the hearing aid, but I need the hearing aid to get the job/income in the first place. Bad chicken and egg problem.

You should ask your recruiter, most medical exams are like this this. I have worked at two (2) companies and my company do real hearing test. I have never had a problem that could not be corrected. DOT does allow hearing aides.

They whisper loudly.Have someone do a whisper test on you before going.Maybe see your doctor and he can determine if you need a hearing aid or not.If you do not have a doctor then go to a walk in clinic. They're very affordable.

Ok, this is a valid question. The fact is, hearing in an 18 wheeler is not all that important. And It is. Most of the data you get is from your eyes. You have radios going, just mirrors to see 50 - 60 feet behind you. Can't hear anything back there anyway. You see all you can from your Cab. You feel your truck, & know when something's wrong. Hearing, Train Horns are a must. Trains always win. New Nice trucks are so well made today can't hear anyway. I prefer Clean glass, & spotless mirrors, too hearing everyday. But I also have a 4500 watt stereo in my truck.

Every company ive had a physical always gave me the forced whisper test.I figured DOT would allow hearing aides.Never heard otherwise.
