I see urban buses with zero emissions hydrogen fuel cell hybrid electric and diesel electric hybrid power trains all the time. What's the delay in developing these as an alternative to the troublesome SCR and particulate filter technology now in place? It seems to me that at the very least the noisy and power wasting engine breaking systems ought to be converted to dynamic electric generation braking that can create power on the downhill which can be briefly stored for an electric power boost on the next uphill climb. These seem to require very little space and don't need transmission gearing. The extra cost on the front end could be somehow financed by the projected fuel savings...

there are much simpler ways to save fuel and money , we use scr since early 2005 and there is no major problems with it as long as you use good adblue (def) certainly less problems than with egr

about jake brakes and noise , that is american way here engine brakes are quite and can be used everywhere

about hybrid , where are you planing to store that amount of energy? batteries are heavy and expensive , also if you want more braking power hydraulic is always lighter than electric

in my opinion hybrid might be usable for start and stop operations like city buses or refuse collector trucks but nowhere else , for me total idea about hybrid is funny i dont know how americans become so crazy about it , there are much simpler cheaper lighter ways to save fuel , i would never forget about top gear movie from usa when after some redneck shoot toyota prius with minigun; jeremy clarkson say: if you want to save world buy golf diesel

but there is something you might be interested in , in europe some trucks have truck engine driven(can be electrical or hydraulic but hydraulic is not as efficient since you lose lot of energy in start already)reefer bodies/trailers so there is no auxiliary engines , this kind of systems are expensive but they are more environmentally friendly since those aux engines are not clean and truck engine use less fuel while truck is parked , and when driving they can be set to coll as much as possible when you are braking or going downhill ......so your cargo save is best battery for energy

The infrastructure doesn't currently exist for OTR hydrogen, busses and garbage trucks can be refueled at the terminal every time.

Natural Gas is coming and the technology has been there for decades.
As for saving fuel, the recent engines do quite a bit of savings compared to last generations without SCR & DEF ( of course is they are tuned correctly )

In trucking the engine is only 1 part of the fuel consumption equation, a lot could be done in aerodynamics, transmission, tires to further increase the potential efficiency of the truck. but nothing will replace a driver's foot to get the most out of every gallons.

NG is here, really) All buses in Lugansk are with CNG tanks, many trucks too.

I have LPG tank under my van and I use no gas
