If $500.00 is two weeks of your income you might want to try something else. I can pick up aluminum cans and make $250.00 a week. And as far as a load booked not picked up charge you dont have a dime in it. This guy had a grand in the load. According to you thats a months pay. Should he have to fork over a grand because the shipper cant read a tape measure.?
To TONU or NOT to TONU... That is the question

I could make more money doing a lot of things. Like any new business, you have to go into the red before you get into the black. I'm still in the red. We don't get a regular paycheck. We are 100% commissioned, and our commissions aren't very much. There is money to be made in this field, but it won't happen very quickly. I know the perception among many drivers is that we make as much on a load as the driver, but I will bet you my paycheck that you made more money last month working less hours than I did.

Hey OZR, you didn't answer my question. Was this supposed to be a legal load that turned into an oversize load?
-
depends on what you consider a legal load.
they way it sounded. the load is legal. but once on the trailer it isn't. sounded like a lowboy should have been ordered instead. unl;ess that's what was ordered.
once it was on the trailer. it was 14 feet 1 inch high. or 5 inches high. depending on who measured it right and who didn't.
said it was a tank. i would think there would at least be a lid to umount to bring the height down. -
Here is something to consider, the RULES ARENT MICKEY MOUSE! They are put in place to protect you! If the load can go legal height on an RGN or stepdeck than it must be loaded on said trailer IE; a 3' deck height can load an 11' load and be legal in most states at 14', LS gives you a max of 14'6" overall height on a stepdeck which is what most states give you. Now here is the kicker, you can be shut down by the DOT or not issued permits if the load can be put on an RGN and made legal height doesn't happen often except in the north east, NC can bust hump and a few others. Now if it was just over height but fell into the spec of LS and the DOT and you didn't want to haul it then its on you! Read the regs you may come to a better understanding. The TONU pay BITES Ill be the first to admit it but its better than nothing, at least it covers some of your fuel, most Agents will get you permits and pilots, if you already ordered them on top of the TONU.
Second upon receipt of the load confirmation you should call the shipper(speak to someone whos looking at the piece to be hauled to confirm the load dimensions and then order your permits.
BTW Marc, we have had a few differences, but well put and I concur on both of the comments, you'd go broke paying out of pocket in most cases.
Unless your OZR he has plenty of money to throw around, just ask him about the hottub, pool and parking lot! lolLast edited: Jun 9, 2013

A legal load is any load that fits within the limits of the trailer, i.e. 102 wide 53' long and the magic 13'6" height and legal gross weight. The only exception to the rule is 48' trailer you can have an over hang not to exceed 4' rear and 2' front as long as your over all length doesn't exceed 75'
No, most tanks are solid tanks with no lids or removable pieces -
No worries, Dogcatcher, I don't think you're a bad guy. I'm still learning this business, and misunderstood what was expected. I'm on this forum to try to get better. TONU are tricky, because the shipper holds most of the cards. I once got a guy his full rate, after they couldn't get anyone there to load him, but there have been other times when the shipper just refused. If they refuse, what can I do beside never deal with them again and remind them of their lack of ethics. They know they can call 800 other Landstar agents. I can't very well drive to Chicago and punch his face.
LSAgentOZR Thanks this. -
Son, the mickey mouse rules I speak of are Landstar's rules and they are not put in place to protect me. That is why this guy didnt haul this load. He couldn't. He wasnt qualified in their system. Maybe Henry Gerkins owes TONU.landstar8891 Thanks this.

I just drove 150 miles deadhead this morning.I am back home now..The load i booked was booked at 20,000 Lbs.I got to my P/U and it was a 44,000 lb Load..This is NOT THE AGREEMENT...!!!!!...
I called the ''agent'' and he tried to ''candy coat'' and BLAME the customer..I seen right through the B/S.The shipping coordinator was right there and showed me what he sent the agent.44,000 lbs..!!!!!!...Another Micky Mouse Agent for Landstar doing what alot of them do best...LIE,LIE,LIE...
I called Agent on his B/S and told him i have a copy of the fax customer sent you..He then ''changed his tune''..He offered me a whole 50.00 to cover the load..
I said NO THANKS i want my TONU.He said No..I called Landstar Customer Service and they think i will win by AGENT FAULT.This may even come out of his own Pocket, landstar says.It is considered Incomplete Dispatch..
Besides all the right or wrong,TONU is a JOKE...Landstar and Agents suck the big one at this one...We only get the 72% or 65% of 250.00...BIG DEAL...We BCO's have all the money and time invested and get SCREWED AS USUAL FROM LANDSTAR...
And the kicker is there is NO LAWS or REGULATIONS to stop agents from this Insane Practice. They get a slap on the hand. This is why i call for CSA Scores for Brokers/Agents..That will fix and weed out the scum...
+++++++ this is not aimed at OZR..OZR is much behtter than most here at Landstar++++++++++Desert_Skies and Dewey120 Thank this. -
Wait, Not qualified by LS?? In other words he didn't have enough rating to haul the load, ie SD 2, 3 , 4 ......... If that is the case then LS/heavyhaul felt it wouldn't be safe for him to handle that large of a load? Then the rules worked. You have to have confidence first off when you call heavyhaul or they will turn you down and there must be something there that said it would be to much of a risk that they denied him to haul it. I'm second guessing but there had to be a reason they said no. Usually its the experience thing with either height or width that get them
