Turn it off for about 12 hours not connected to any power source. Then charge on AC for about 3 hours. If only DC, then charge about 6 hours. DO NOT TURN ON. After the allotted time frame turn the 720 on.

It could be a screen issue or the battery is not charged enough.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Anyone know where I can find a compatible USB sync cable for the TND 720 (hooks to computer for updates) while on the road? I don't have time to wait for it to come by mail, then have my office manager overnight it to me... aside from the stupid cost for shipping, it would be much easier to buy one from a truck stop, or failing that, walmart?

Also, Mark: We bought the 720 from dieselboss, and it came with lifetime maps once we sent in the form. It's been 7 months now, and we've never heard back from Rand McNally about our maps. Do they send us something? If yes, how can we trace the registration process to see where it is at?

    Thanks much.

USB cord: it is a standard item at just about any WalMart, Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc. Not sure if the truck stops sell them. Also, most digital cameras use the same cord if you have one of those too.

Maps: Your 720 came preloaded with the latest maps. To make sure that yours is registered correctly with Lifetime Maps, connect it to a computer and open the TND Dock software. On the Main screen of the dock it will say "Lifetime Maps Subscribed: Yes" at the top-right. Rand does not send something in addition to the Dock Notification message mentioned in the previous sentence.

You should connect to a computer with the dock about once per month if possible to check for new software updates, road construction updates, and about once per year you will see "Map Update Available." Your unit has the latest maps that have been released so far for the 720 model, but there will likely be software and construction updates ready for it if you have not checked lately.

Also, since you got it from us, you can always call here for direct phone support Mon-Fri if anything I said in this post is unclear, or if you need help doing anything on or with the unit.

    VisionLogistics Thanks this.

Just a note on the USB cable. Rand does use a higher quality than what a camera will use. The camera is a quick fix. Just make sure as you look at the USB end you see 5 pins looking back at you.

Once you do receive the Rand USB cable use it.

    Thanks,
    Mark

I've had my 510 for 2 years now and don't have a problem with it. But I also shut it off every night, just like I do with the PC. My Rand is the most useful tool in the truck. Back in the day I had to have maps for every place I went and phone every customer for directions. If one uses common sense this tool will save you time and money.

all usb cables are the same. none is better quality then another.

and walmart around these parts hasn't had any to buy lately. i'll buy a few at a time off the internet. usually amazon. you can usually buy them for about 2 bucks. i use them 100 percent. so they don't last long. except for the dedicated cable i leave plugged into the computer which hardly gets used.

and for those that want to argue quality. i get the same life span out of the original cables with any products that i do with the 2 dollar cables. they just don't last. although occasionally one will come along that does go the miles.

Thanks for the reply! Here's a new question: A couple of months ago I began seeing the LED on the TND720 blinking green/red/gren/red etc. I figured it was my lighter-plug wiggling. Well... I just plugged the unit into the laptop for an unpdate, using the new USB cable I bought, and what's this? The blinking is still happening? Yes, and in fact it appears to be a loose connection. I recall last year reading about this having been identified as a manufacturing defect and was being evaluated for re-engineering. Did I get one of the original runs, or have they just not fixed this condition yet? Thanks.

There is a difference in quality. The cheaper USB cables sometimes will not work between the Computer and the TND. The TND cable is a better quality for less data loss.

    Thanks,

USB from the computer does not supply enough current to charge the 7" units. Does it do this on AC also?

    Thanks,
    Mark
