So I bought a used truck with 1.1 M on it. I think I bought it cheap enough that I can justify rebuilding it if needed.
But should I?
It has some blowby, but most engines have some. I need to do a blowby test. What is the non-professional mechanic's method for a blowby test? I recall using a glass bottle filled with water under the blowby hose or something like that.
I went and hauled a load with it, and it goes right down the road. Runs like a champ. It passed the seat-of-the-pants dyno test fine.
Should I take it to the CAT house and dyno it to test it out?
Without knowing anything else, I should change all fluids and have an oil sample taken, right?
CAT records only show fixing a fuel leak at around 900k miles, but nothing else.
I'd love to hear Mr. Haney's opinion.

Dyno it, they will do a blowby test.
Run an oil sample
Do an injector cutout test.
Those are basically the big 3 things you can do. After passing those three, check the CAC for leaks and run the overhead. -
Only problem with dynoing it is cat will put the those #### low NOx settings in it automatically.

It's a 2000 model 2WS pre-emission motor, so I wouldn't think they'd put anything in it that wasn't stock. As far as I know, it's just a stock 475. I understand that CAT won't do an upgrade for you, but I don't see why they'd downgrade it if it's stock.

My 5EK is a pre-emission engine as well. Stopped in to Western States Cat in Meridian Idaho for a water pump replacement, I come walking out of the waiting area and see the tech hooked into my truck. Went over and promptly unplugged his computer from my truck but is was to late. He'd already downloaded the low Nox settings into it. I asked him why he was hooked up to my computer and was told that Cat own the programing and that the government says they have to upload the latest Nox settings into the ecm's when they come in. My truck now has a lock I built over the diagnostic plug and I only let one person plug into my truck now. I sure Cat would love to take my tune out of the ecm but it isn't going to happen on my watch

If it runs good why rebuild? U may have another 3-400k u could get outta it before it tells u its time. I bought mine when it had 1.7 mil, i ran it 10k did an oil sample all came back clean and normal, pulled a 2nd oil sample two changes later all good. Do ur preventitive maintenance, get under the truck yourself and look for things that need attention anf fix stuff u cant see when it breaks.
Ive never checked blowby and dont really care bout that, run it and see how it does for using oil the next 12k
Last summer had a weird noise at idle that wasnt there, shop looked at it pulled covers off top, head was wore out some other stuff was shot, new head rockers ect basically top was all redone, asked how all else looked they said good to go, so i run it till lower end needs replaced. Up to u if u got deep pockets but i say run er fix er when it breaks, u start fixin stuff that aint broke yet youll start havin to fix stuff that does break on ya

I put a lock on mine too and a lil sign that says im gonna beat ur ### if u try plugging into my #### without permission!
I stay away from them cat dealers tho -
They got mine also a couple years back. It's a 1999 3406e.
They like to tell you that's it'll effect nothing but the exhaust. They are wrong. It will cut fuel economy and make the temp. run slightly higher.
I still don't see how it's legal for them to do it, but they do.. -
Do an overhead and start oil sampling to get a baseline on wear metals started.
