So here it goes, I have been in the Army for over 23 years so far and will retire within the next year or so. I have been thinking about joining the industry for over a year now. Married with three kids but I think I am set up better then most going into trucking because I have been deployed for a year at a time and it really hasn't effected my family life. With the low pay getting into trucking I once again will be better off because of my retirement check from the military. I have been reading up and watching videos on youtube about the industry and I am telling you a guy/gal could get lost. From what I have seen or heard there are a lot of companies to stay away from but the one I lean towards is Schneider. I know, I know, not everyone likes Schneider but it looks like from what I have seen treats ex-military pretty good. Also they mention that I would get additional money from the government the first year from my GI bill. So again netter off then most because the retirement check, the GI bill money (up to 1,270 a month) plus what ever I make driving. It doesn't matter where I live to work because I am stationed in Hawaii and when I retire I will have to move stateside anyway. Give me your thoughts on my choice of Schneider!!!! Thanks for reading and look forward to the replies!!!
So to be retired military guy

Schneider doesn't treat military any better . You'd be wasting your benefits going there . Do you realize you have to get trainee pay for a year to continue getting trainee reimbursement ? You can earn $1200 a month more with a better carrier .
That said there are far better careers to train in than the trucking industry .Big Duker Thanks this. -
Well RickG, what are they and why is it a waste of my of my pay and if there is a better industry what is it. I could stay in the field I have worked in for 23* years which is aviation and yes that is my fall back job if it doesn't work out but I would rather be on the road then stuck in a hangar for the next 20 years.

Oh and what is the training pay like. I know you don't get that much pay but I was thinking it would be more then 2000 a month. Is it and if not what is it?

Schneider sucks. That's really all one needs to know. They have always been bottom feeders. Coming in and cutting rates at the expense of decent equipment and driver pay. Now that the economy sucks they have ventured into one of the few well paying transport fields-the oil patch-and are trying the same thing. You are nothing to them and never will be. Tanker freight is another area they are trying to run down to ex cons , losers, and criminal illegals. They start at the bottom and sell down. Good companies sell up with their service and exceptional people. Rick G is correct and has been there for yrs watching the rats like Schneider, FFE, CR England, Stevens, CRST, others turn truckers into poor people.
RickG Thanks this. -
So if you were to get into trucking right now knowing what you know about the industry which company would you choice to get into the field.
-
Now see, you haven't done your research . I can't say specifically what Schneider training pay is . Just note it says benefits from the GI bill are UP TO $1275 .
My point is the year long training is ridiculous . After a month or two at the most you'd be solo with another carrier and making much more money . Those that know the industry warn against year long commitment .
I can't recommend another career because I don't know what your aptitudes and interests are . -
RickG, As far as research I tried as much as my little brain would allow!!! I went to numerous forums, Glassdoor (a job rating search engine) and posting replies on youtube to drivers. I have gone to different company home pages and researched them that way. I went to trucker job postings and felt overwhelmed. I have read truckers report a hundred times (which a lot of drivers do not care for the driver mills) and I really can't think of anything else. Not knowing any other way to pick a company I leaned towards Schneider based off of the things I seen. Not knowing about the mom and pop companies I didn't think about getting into this with a small company. Any suggestions would be great because I am looking hard at this and like everyone says go to a truck stop and talk to truckers. The thing is there isn't any truck stops in Hawaii so that is the only reason I posted this thread. What is your idea of a good company and even toss some names out there to guide this misguided old man!!
-
Also RickG. I read that with Schneider that you will drive with a trainer for 6 to 8 weeks and then you will be out solo, I guess that is the recruitment tactic!!
-
You need to find someone that is at least 6 months into the Schneider military program to get your answers on training programs . We aren't allowed to post links to other driver forums here so Google Schneider driver forums .
If you go to Schneider's website and click driving schools you'll see thishttp://schneiderjobs.com/company-drivers/driving-school-programs#additionaltraining
Most likely you'll use GI Benefits for CDL school so why go to a carrier requiring a year committment ?
