Just curious. I've met a lot of people from very VERY different backgrounds out on the road.

I was a Vice President of Physical Asset Management at a very large Sub-Prime mortgage company for about 2.5 years before they went bankrupt and kicked me out into the street and I got my CDL last summer. Before that I was in Facilities Management and Asset Management at EarthLink. Started there in Tech Support and worked my way up in management til I found my facilities management niche.

I'm also a Marine Reservist, managed to get back in after 18 years out. After I got laid off, I found that nobody in Southern Cal wanted a middle manager, not even fast food joints (overqualified). I got into trucking because I love driving. Granted, I had only driven cars across the country, but it was fun nonetheless. Nowhere near as much money as I was making, but the job satisfaction is there, and the lack of meaningless meetings, office politics, and the desire to bring a belt-fed weapon into work is a big plus.

    What is YOUR background?

Currently I'm hauling livestock. Ten to twelve hours each day, and I get to sleep in my own bed every night.

Worked for a building supply company for a few years delivering drywall and stucco to job sites. I really liked this job...pay wasn't the greatest, but it had decent benefits. Most of the time I was done after 8 hours. Unfortunately the housing market crashed, and I was out of a job.

Did four months for Gordon Trucking when I graduated from AIT driving school. It was a good starter company, but I couldn't pass up the local gig that became available.

Worked in a chemical plant primarily loading/unloading tankers. It was very tight in there, and this is where I gained skills moving trailers around. This job is also what got me interested in driving truck for a living.

Army for six years as a watercraft operator (88k). Primarily I was on LCM-8 and LARC LX-60.(you can google it if you want to know what it is) Aside from that I did a heck of a lot of duty driving for company and battalion.

As a Specialist E5 in the U.S. Army, I was filling an E6 position as Officers' Personnel Records and Pay Supervisor, Headquarters Army Air Defense Command, part of the NORAD Headquarters in Colorado Springs. Previously, I had taken truck driver training in North Carolina. With lots of letter writing, I lined up a driving job with a manufacturer in Sedalia, MO before being discharged from the Army.

I worked for TWA (used to be a Airline) for 38 years before they sold the company to American. I had no desire to move to Dallas.
Last job was scheduling pilots in the training dept. They would displace the line pilot if they needed to line check a bid pilot. Bid pilot got to stay home and still was paid for the trip.
Also worked in Capacity Mgt, setting up the overbooking levels for each flight. Also did Flight Attendant scheduling and planning.
Oh, in the mid 70's spent 3 years in Jeddah, Saudia Arabia working for the Saudi Airline as Mgr-Flight Crew Planning.
I got my CDL and hauled concrete then switched over to the end dump side and am now hauling concrete pipe on a flatbed. Home every night except for a occasional trip out of town.

During high school, I volunteered about 30-40 hours a week at a local Christian Rock radio station and fell in love with Radio, ended up getting a degree in Radio / TV broadcasting.

Then I got a degree in Education. Graduated in 04, taught that fall in Vegas with my wife. We resigned that next summer when my wife was hired in MN (our home state). I worked up there as a para professional and at nights at Wal Mart about 20 miles away. She wasn't brought back.

We then moved to south central WY where we were hired on to teach. Apparently I didn't do things I wasn't told to do, so I was cut, and my wifes position was cut due to lack of funding.

Now, we moved west to another town in WY and my wife was hired as a teacher. Im working for Schneider on a dedicated account and Im making a bit more than I did last year as a teacher and after a year with my raises if I stay with the comp, I will be making quite a bit more than I would have as a teacher back there.

I have a hankering to get back into the classroom, but Im tired of the politics and the gossipers in schools. I love kids and teaching but the stress is a big turn off. Not sure what I want to do. Hate having two degrees and not using them.
