Totally agreed. I found exactly same thing during mi 17 years in this business. I so tired to deal with it. I just went independent.
You probably won't like this advice, but...

As far as how early to show up and why, that's also dependant on the operation. One place I haul out of you grab preloaded trailers. If you aren't ready to drop a line and drop the hammer 20 minutes early, you'll leave late at least 1 in 5 trips. You can't count on the last guy to write up the trailers or the yard crew to not rip the tags off and set the trailers, meaning you have to fix the trailer before you leave to be complaint. You may not get glamed for the late, but I'd rather get home on time.
Other jobs, yeah, 45 mins early may be unnecessary. You'll learn where you can find/make an advantage.Ghost Ryder Thanks this. -
You hit the nail on the head. I have a local feeder that does 15 drop & hooks per day in a 8 hr period. I also work nights, so if the afternoon driver that came before me didn't set up the trailers, it'll make for a long night. Long as in if I fall behind I will not be able to catch up. This is why being there 30-45 minutes early will help. It's not because I don't have a personal life or I'm trying to suck up, it's because I'm giving myself more time to make the job easier if it's needed.bigdogpile Thanks this.

It's a very serious boys club Broker...... I work with several of them.......got rings, belt buckles and secret hand shakes etc. One of their newbies is wearing a sticker on his hard hat ....looks like an upside down J with a dot over it. He wont say what it means but I'm guessing newbie or prospect.
Supposed to have ultimate trust among members........like here's 100k cash, hang on to it for me or take to that guy for me and like no worries.
I think they will let you in....... they have a motto here, " TO BE ONE, ASK ONE " so find one and check him out.... -
Then you can be a Shriner later on.

Freemasonry isn't a secret society. They will allow you to join if you can pass the backround checks and the initiation.Last edited: Jun 20, 2013

Agreed! (to the original poster) Its called the "honeymoon phase".
Another reason companies do this for the first 90 days is because they can haul their freight at the utmost cheapest because they are only paying a trainee's rate to haul it. -
What do the background checks and "initiation" consist of?

It's a secret....

We tie a rope to your feet and drag you down the street on a motorcycle.

They will check for felonies and misdemeanors. When you sign a petition to join a lodge, a committee of 3 Masons will be assigned to you. Each one will interview you separately, then all 3 will interview you together. You have to be voted into the lodge by all members. If one member does not vote you in, you will not become a member of the Lodge. This is where the term "Blackballed" came from.
The 'initiation' is in 3 parts, or degrees.
If the Lodge votes you in, you will be notified of when you can attend the 1st degree, or the Entered Apprentice. The 2nd degree is the Fellow Craft degree, and third is the Master Mason. If you want to go higher (33 degrees are possible), that's when you would have to get into different parts of the fraternity, such as the Scottish Rite.Last edited: Jun 21, 2013
