Not sure if this would help anybody exactly not being in a truck yet but I thought it would put it out there. There are a couple of programs for people with laptops or computers on the road that I thought might be useful . The first one is a program called NetStumbler 0.4.0 is a free program which allows you to track WiFi hotspots or any open WiFi signals I use it on my laptop for years and it anything it is fun to see how many WiFi networks are out there it will then signal you in various methods to let you know that there is one available .now whether you can access that spot or not is dependent upon whether it is encrypted or locked in some way but you would be surprised how many people leave their network wireless network open or even near hotels or such buildings that allow access. The next program that I find useful to save on my cell phone bills even while I am home or on the road with my laptop is a program called icall it allows you to make free outgoing phone calls to landline phones or two other Icall users on the computer which is also a free program I have been using it quite some time and have never had any problems with it people can even call you on it from their landline with the extension number that they issue you I hope maybe someone finds them useful as I have over the years of course there is always Yahoo ,Skype, and other voice programs but
icall seems to be the best for making phone calls to land lines from a computer hope this was helpful to somebody.

Using an "OPEN" WiFi network that YOU ARE NOT AUTHORIZED to use is ILLEGAL in all states.

I'm sorry if it was missunderstood by no means did i mean to hack a net work it just helps you locate a signal and says if it is private or public

Perhaps YOU misunderstood what I meant.
If you find and USE an "open access" point, and you DON'T HAVE authorization to use it; for example: by PAYING FOR IT or ASKING PERMISSION even if it is free, it is ILLEGAL. It has NOTHING to do with "hacking".

There have been several cases of people using the "FREE WIFI" provided by Companies with-out permission, that have been charged and convicted of crimes.

In addition: if the current proposed Legislation is signed into law, you can kiss WiFi GOOD-BY, even private WiFi.

Thanks Lexydog43 for this post. I have been meaning to look up a program that helps find wifi spots and this one looks like it is what I needed. I really appreciate it. :biggrin_25514:

Maybe it's just me.... But my PC will notify me anytime it finds an open Wi-Fi connection. All thats required is that I have my Wi-Fi enabled. I typically keep it disabled while driving, because it's a pain in the butt when it hides my GPS with a notice.

Cell phone bills???? I pay $120 a month, and have yet to go over my minutes....ever. We typically have roll overs left.

Wow! I had no idea it was illegal to access an "open" hot spot! I have done this for years at coffee shops, hospitals, hotels, etc. Sometimes even personal linksys systems that were not locked. I guess I will stick to my air card from now on.

Thankyou Roadkill for posting this info. I have no desire to be dragged into court over something like this.

From what I understand that if you are a customer at these locations and have permission to use them (usually if you are a customer then you have permission to use them) then you would be fine. Its when you use them outside the building and therefore not a customer then you dont have permission (usually hotels and the like) and signals labelled simply 'linksys' are usually home signals. If you have a home Wi-Fi always MAKE IT SECURE, that way there is less likelihood that someone will hack into it...not impossible but less likely, because even if people are not hacking personal info they are using your bandwidth and slowing your signal down!!!
