Hi my name is Jay and I joined to learn from those with the experience and the knowledge I lack. I plan on attending Orangeburg/Calhoun or Greenville Tech here in South Carolina. Once out of school what type of jobs are normally available for newbies. (1st) question. Does anyone know if one school is better than the other, or have an opinion. (2nd) As far as jobs go what types of jobs are best for an old fart that do not require a lot of lifting, keeps someone close to home and requires day or early evening driving. I am not after big money, but the more the better. Benefits are a big deal. Your responses will be greatly appreciated. It is great to have a forum like this. Thanks Jay

unfourtunately Jay, your entry level trucking jobs are mostly over the road with little home time for the first year while you get experience. Then you can be more selective if you keep a clean driving record. You may get with a trainer that has a dedicated run in your area where you could get home more often, but that is not the usual. As for lifting, those days are in the past, as most companies now pay for unload services so drivers hardly ever touch frieght for the most part. Best of luck, let me know if I can help.

The best paying jobs are tanker. Contact Schneider about that. They hire new drivers. Hazmat pays the best, usually $60K + per year. Food grade tanker usually $50K + per year. The only work to tanker, in most cases, is hooking up hose to unload. The companies I mention have their own tanker school & pay you while in training. Tanker school usually lasts about a week.

Some others to contact about tanker :

    Florida Rock & Tank
    Prime, Inc. (tanker division)

    (1) Schools really don't make a difference . (2) Check with city and county jobs , maybe get a passenger endorsement and drive a shuttle bus . You could go for the hazmat endorsement and apply to a local propane company
