Some of the answers to my questions don't fit in with the title of this thread. Maybe you could answer them in your book though!? :)

I would think even doing training the right way from the jump seat that you could run more miles than a solo. You could essentially drive 13.75 hours per day as opposed to 11 solo. Its beneficial for a trainee to observe his trainer driving so splitting the driving would be a good way to go.

Rob, you lose time as a trainer. Everything takes longer. Pre-trips take twice as long. It takes you or I a few minutes to pull out of the hole and get on the highway. It takes them at least 5-7. Every turn is sloooowww. Let's not forget backing. If you think you will drive more miles as a trainer you will be sadly mistaken.

Also, they have to run their own trip plan. Once they go solo there will be no more "extra" driving hours available.

Well I don't tell stories about my trainees as it would be unfair. Training is when your supposed to make the dumb mistakes. I didn't laugh at them then and I won't now. But I will say that I haven't had too many scary situations. They all grasp it eventually and I have examples but they would make boring reading.

I train because I enjoy it. I like the fact that I get to make a contribution to the future of the company. I like the extra respect that I get for being a trainer, I won't lie it feels good.

Most of them call me a few times and then it slowly tapers off. I try to train as completely as I can but of course they forget things or maybe we never encountered something or maybe I forgot to tell them something. They call for all types of reasons but I tell them to call me before they mess something up.

Training takes a lot of patience and a lot of talking. I talk constantly and never let a learning situation pass.
I can't say what gives people the most trouble as everyone is different but if pressed I would say backing. The correction I make the most is not looking in the mirrors, I correct that multiple times every day. I like to put my hat so that's it's blocking the passenger mirror and see how long it takes them to realize it. I also let people get lost, it's going to happen eventually anyway. At least with me they can have help.

I don't really keep stats on my students so I can't tell you how many or if they are still with the company or not. Students drive 95% of the time on my truck.

Lone Gunman and Twicebit Thank this.

I am speaking from my experience at Superior. I was with trainers for 6 weeks. Honestly 10 days sounds a little short. Yes I was slower but we always split the driving. It wasn't OTR except for 1 week but we did some out and back runs that would have required a solo to take a 10.

I agree, I wish our training time was longer but most guys do get it after 10 days and if they dont they can get additional time. By the way this message brought to you from Winston-Salem.

Ethos - Thanks for this thread. You have helped me make a very difficult decision, to put my app in with SNI and see what happens.

Do your Qualcomms have turn by turn navigation? Thanks
