New to Trucking

Maverick may hire you without the formal schooling. Check their website to see if you're in the hiring area.

Most companies will want some type of formal schooling. The best pay will be tanker/hazmat.

Schneider & Prime, Inc. both have tanker school and hire new drivers. Prime will hire you with no formal schooling, but not sure about Schneider; call and ask.

NO NO NO...You did it the ''right way''...Great Job on not following the SHEEP to the slaughter house...Now you have to pound the pavement and knock on doors and tell them your situation...Someone will take a chance and train you with one of there drivers...A friend of mine just did it and landed a ''local'' gig and he was trained by the company for 4 weeks or so...

Stay away from the Bottom Suck Hole Companies...Stay in your Houston Area and keep ringing the phones and banging on the doors..Go to a small mom and pops company..Go ''Market'' yourself and do not take NO for an answer.

I did it the same way. So let me ask you the same question that they asked me when I went beating the bushes at the smaller companies, "Can you drive?"

There are no excuses that will work (never driven a manual, don't know how to work a 10,13, whatever, don't like going here or there, I want to be home every weekend.... Etc). Simple question and all they expect is a yes or no answer. Can you drive.? Either " Yes, I can drive" or NO. If you say yes, you get an immediate road test. If they don't think you can drive, you're out. Don't bother to beg or argue. If you can, they will run your DMV and throw you a set of keys. Orientation is over, prepare to battle. Any hesitation and you're toast.

So can you drive? The smaller companies are better, true, but they're more hardcore too. Absolutely no handholding. It's like signing up for the military and someone asking you if you can fight. If you say yes, you had better be prepared to fight right then

 

Forgot to mention: Don't go tooting your own horn. "I'm 3rd generation trucker. Grandpa, dad and 2 uncles taught me everything. Been around trucks all my life..." OR "I was the valedictorian at my school, college educated...". Keep your words down to a minimum and show them that you can drive.

Houstons a good area...plenty of smaller companies there to get you started. Luck in battle.

 

All CDL mills do is qualify you to pass the DMV test (after several tries for some ) . They never fail anyone . Just what type job are you looking for ? This city job isn't bad but they say 6 months experience . Good example of no school or OTR required . http://tinyurl.com/kytskq4

 

The CDL mills may not teach that much but unfortunately most of the larger companies out there aren't going to hire you unless you attended an accredited school. This is mandated by the insurance companies.

That may not be a bad thing. You are now forced to find a smaller carrier. You have your work cut out for you though! Its not going to be easy finding a driving job with no experience and not schooling. So its really going to be up to you when you take your driving test at the companies interviewing you. If you can show them that you can drive then they may take you on. If you can't shift, back or drive very well you may want to consider schooling. Like RickG said its not they really teach you but it is time allotted for practicing.

Keep checking Craigslist and aim for the smaller companies that aren't doing that big advertising.
