Truck is a 13 speed Peterbilt. I am grinding when I downshift on a flat and downhill. For some reason, I downshift perfect going uphill with no grinds. Going uphill, I gas very little. I tried gassing it little on flats and downhills, but it grinds. So I gas it more, still grinds. I'm downshifting between 900-1100 rpms. Clutch, gas, clutch, from 5 to 4, and 4 to 3, and yes upshift switch is down. What am I doing wrong?

Are you using an engine brake? If so it will cause the RPM's to drop and cause the gears to grind. The speed of transmission is not synchronize with the speed of the engine therefore the engine RMS have to be manually adjusted. Also, you might be pressing the clutch in too far. You only need ti go about an half inch or you will engage the clutch brake and grind the gears

When you rev the engine to bring the RPM's up and complete the shift, (to achieve synchro), what RPM are you trying to complete the shift? Also, that value will change slightly as you are gearing down in the lowers as road speed decreases.

I float my 13 all the time, and that's easier and cleaner for me personally than clutching it.

Edit: Yes, as the above poster mentioned, if you're jake is on, try turning it off until you get good at grabbing gears... it'll make life hard if you leave it on.

We do float from 5th gear on, but its only up shifting. . I just double checked and the Jakes are on at full blast, just turned it off. Will it make much different on the flats? I downshifted perfect on an 8-speed, but once I got in the 13 speed, it was like night and day. I up shift perfect on the 13 speed at 1500 rpms, its just downshifting. I don't look for an rpm when downshifting between 900-1100, I gas by feel of the petal and sound of the engine. I think u guys are right, the Jakes on and depressing the clutch too far could be my problem.

Yeah, it will make a huge difference. DGStrong probably solved your problem. After you're used to it, you can leave it on, and be fast enough that it won't usually matter. Especially with floating the downshift, you can pop the throttle and keep your foot into enough that the jake won't engage because the TPS is sending a positive value to the ECM.

I got used to my jake being on most of the time so its not an issue for me

Are you also watching your RPM before trying to downshift? you need to make sure your RPM's have dropped low enough before putting in neutral and revving to downshift it, based on the RPM it can effect the RPM needed in the end when you rev, so if the RPM is higher than it should be then you need to rev a little higher to get it in.

Also remember every clutch/truck/transmission is different so you have to get used to it again. I drive a 9 speed right now, during school was 8 speeds and during my training with a mentor a 13 so I had my share of jumping around to different transmissions. Some like RPM's a little higher than others.

Engaging traction control on the difs will also change shift style needed.

I find that disengaging the jake to make the downshift makes it easier. I switch off the jake, shift, then reengage the jake.
