I see in almost every single thread out there regarding the classic "What school should I go to?" question, the response of "Go to a state technical school....you'll get A LOT more training time!"
Why on earth would someone want to spend MORE time in class?
The companies dont care, they'll hire you straight out of the so called CDL mills with 160 hours. Theyre going to put you with a trainer anyways, they dont expect you to be an expert....they just want you to have your CDL and meet some minimum requirements.
You guys do realize that every single minute you spend in class YOURE NOT GETTING PAID!!!
Every hour you spend in a state technical school, past the required hours to get hired, is time wasted......sitting around not getting paid....when you could be getting a paycheck already.
You guys also realize that most state technical schools are the length they are (typically 8-10 weeks) because they have to be in order to be state funded, something about them being Title IV schools....not because you need the extra time to get your CDL.
Do yourselves a favor, pull the job placement record of the local state college....look how pathetic it is. Some of the courses at my local college have less than a 40% placement ratio. My recruiter when I was with TMC told me he didnt even bother recruiting from Tennessee Technology Center because every time he went there he saw nothing but felons getting their training paid for by WIA and professional students that have taken every class the school has to offer trying to live off student loans.
The truth is all the school options have their problems. Contract training is total garbage and the ABSOLUTE worst way to get trained. Left with the choice of a state school for 8 weeks and a 4 month waiting period, a private school was my only choice. I needed to get to work and get to work NOW! 3 weeks later I was in Des Moines earning a paycheck again.
Why does everyone want to spend MORE time in class?

Might be the same reason kids go to college forever.

Those felons the recruiter told you about can be placed the day they graduate. A smart recruiter could make money if he would fill that niche of placing felons. There are companies in the Carolinas and Kentucky that hire them because most of those felons jump at the chance for a fresh start in life.

I notice you're from Lenoir City; do you know anything about Burkhart Enterprises? I heard they are hiring and have some dry bulk tanker jobs. I looked at their website and it looks like they have different types of trucking there.

or be liable to repay trainingChinatown Thanks this. -
Its good to know some companies have the ability to give people that have made mistakes a chance to make it right.Chinatown Thanks this. -
well OP depends on what school you went to i went to a 4 month school in 06 and i came out better trained than the 3 weeker, i could shift better drive better and knew how to do log books and much more than the average 3 week joe schmo. my trainer loved how he didnt have to spend as much time with me than his typical 3 weeker student. I didnt go to no college for the training either I went to a school dedicated to only training people to drive a semi it was more range time than actual class time.
so in actuality it depends on where you go and the time frame you have to do it in. currently im getting my cdl again and have to get retrained due to me being away from trucking for some time which is going to be one of those 3 week trainings i have no reason to go back fro the long class as i still remember how to do it. the school i went to offers a refresher course but they want to much for it so im going the cheaper route. -
I received a 5k grant back in 2009 and went through a 4 week course sponsored by my local community college. It was a great experience. I'm still gainfully employed in the trucking industry after 4 years plus.
Me thinks the OP of this thread is using a pretty big broad brush and I'm not sure why.RickG Thanks this.
